Spanking kids

I don't think this debate has come up before
but what do you think?
I think spanking your kids for something they do wrong is reasonable, if it fits the crime of course. It shows them there are repercussions when you do something bad, and is a suitable discipline

I agree with it.A lot of times,just taking something from someone ain't enough.A belt,on the other hand,almost always gets the job done.

I believe in discipline, it works. You have to have a consistent warning and follow through when it comes to punishment. There is a difference between spanking as a consequence and spanking out of anger. The last which is the wrong way, they child is upset, your upset, nothing gets solved. There is also a specific way admissible spanking is defined. >.>

Well, it depends. If it's a little kid/baby no way.

But I think it's better to take away something they caused the problem because of or something they waste all their time with (aka grounding) first to see if that works on the kid before useing the spanking method.

I do not agree with spanking or physical punishment of any sort. At least on developing humans.

It only makes them fear authority. It does not teach them to respect authority. All it does is program them to fear doing the wrong thing. When raising a child, you should teach them why doing the wrong thing is "bad". Spanking will lead them to believe... "What I did is bad because I got caught, and I now I'm going to be punished."

Children should be raised to follow the law because of their morales or ethics ( I can never remember the difference) tell them too, and not because they fear it.

I agree that spankings are necessary. Howver, not doing it to the point where it causes harm to them. Just enough to get their attention and realize that their are repurcussions for their actions, whether it be good or bad. It almost seems like some kids run rampant nowadays since they know no fear and parents don't punish their kids for their wrongdoings. It may even be tied in somehow to why crime is as high as it is now. If you aren't afraid of your parents, since they do nothing to punish you, it may develop into a superiority complex that you can do anything you want with no ill effects. Hence, they get in trouble and wonder why they're in trouble with the Police...To me, it's a snowball effect...

I think they should be put through something more like what would happen in real life. If you are caught speeding; do the police pull you over and spank you? I think not. A more reasonable consequence is needed. Unless it's something severe (according to the behavior of a child) then physical consequences may ot be appropriate.

Spanking too often can have consequences.
The children who get spanked frequently are more irritable and aggressive towards their peers and are more likely to seek abusive relationships as they become adults.

I know for a fact that that doesn't work.The most that happens is they get annoyed or figure if this is all,I can just keep doing it without really having anything to worry about.

I agree.
Fear =/= Respect, if anything it will make the child more resistant to authority when they become of age.

well physical punishment is shown to lead to significant problems in a child's behavior. no im not saying every kid who's been spanked is gonna grow up to be a serial killer (or idk maybe someone wants to be a serial killer, i dont judge). i just get kinda touchy when something's associated with kids

well, yes teach them about morales and such, but sometimes you have teach them about punishment

but that is a good method, like if they're running in the house, make them pay up their favorite toy or two

some kids might see it just as all talk
like for example, when my little brother is told to do something (like eat his food), and he doesn't do it, and we tell him he's gonna be sent to bed
but there are times when he still won't listen
like I said though, I think both talking AND spanking is the best way to go

I say it's up to parental discretion.

The problem is when spankings turn into beatings.

and i think i read that somewhere that children who are abused as children still love their parents(when they're children) or something because they haven't developed fear in their mind like we have or something like that.....

I'm pretty sure children have fear. Heck even babies can get scared.
Abused children still love their parents because...well it's their parents.
I don't think we should be trying to diagnose them as if their something
wrong with them. What's wrong is the parents who don't love their children.
It would be better to diagnose what's wrong with them.
