Yes Viz would be in a strange place if illlegal images were uploaded as well.

It would be a reasonable legal argument that if viz is hosting copyright infringing naruto images someone uploaded, that they are not able to enforce their copyrights. This could lose them their ability to enforce their copyrights, meaning I could pirate naruto all day long and viz could not touch me legally.

While it isn't certain, it is a plausible legal argument, and I'm sure there is someone ballsy enough to try it.

Again this all contributes to why the photo album feature is too risky. And another example of how needing to play by the legal rules SUCKS for any real corporation.

Yes but you need to SPEND money to screw the rules.

Screwing the rules costs a good amount of money.

So in short, turning on the feature would cost viz a TON of money. And so they will not do so.

Exactly. Look at cost benefit.

It would be cheaper to hire a 40 hr a week minimum wage worker to do nothing but update the image album and have him work for 5 years than it would to deal with 1 legal incident.

No reason under the sun for viz to green light this move.

Unless we're talking about different photo albums, it would require users to upload pictures to Viz's servers. That would mean viz is hosting those pictures which would in turn mean they will have to possibly dedicate more servers with storage space.

It would also mean that Viz is completely liable for the material hosted on the site, as opposed to a linked picture, which can be taken down easily. There are certain illegal content (child pornography for example) that would cause Viz big problems even if they were taken down after only say 5 users sees it.

Then you add in the possibility of the pictures containing some very personal information (like the coordinated of where the picture was taken at for pictures taken with a 3G iPhone) and you will see that there is little chance for a company like Viz to actually want to risk all this.

One way we could do it, which I've been down with over the current method for awhile, would be to moderate all images by default and have them approved. That means they all go into a queue to be approved before appearing on the site. At a certain point, maybe through it back to being open for users that are established enough to not need prior approval.

If we limited the users that could post slightly (like with a really reasonable post count and rep) and got together a team to approve them, I'd be willing to try it on a small scale to see what happens. If we also limited who could view the images (as in other members of the site, possibly with those same requirements), I don't think the bandwidth hit would even register.

Anyone interesting? This may very well go no where, but it'd be fun to try. And if we do do it, I'd recommend doing it going forward, and not taking the time to try to 'preserve' or 'recreate' the current album. It'd give people an excuse to go back and post their pics again as well.

I agree going through and re-creating a whole new album would be annoying, >.>, so I am completely willing to help with this.

I like this idea, so long as the post-count/rep requirements aren't ridiculous.

If we do it though, I think we ought to have a policy against removing said pictures every time you post them.
Having to make people go through and approve a picture only for the poster to want it removed shortly thereafter because of some stupid illogical reason is tedious and redundant. Don't want the picture up, don't post it at all.

Any nominees for the people? Any ideas on the reputation and posts? I'm thinking atleast 25 posts, maybe a hundred on the higher end. I honestly don't pay enough attention to how fast people accrue reputation to make an estimate on that.

And as a reminder, this all might not work out. My intent right now is to just roll with it and see what happens. At worst, we have a little fun with it .

I say the requirements should be somewhere around:
35 to 40 posts and/or at least 50 reputation points, only because it's a privacy matter, more than a profile use of option.
But, still kinda keen on increasing both posts and rep point requirements just a little.

I say at least 100 posts and 1,000 rep points. 10-50 rep points is not that hard to get, with one up rep from me, people can easy get by that. and at least 100 posts so we know that this member is an established and known user.

100 posts is too large of an requirement. I would say 50.

I would say 350 rep point. Even if that is easy to get, you either got many people to rep you or someone with a lot of rep to give you some, which I view as important to some degree.

Besides if you have 50 post you have shown some degree of being around that we can judge you character.

As far as requirements are concerned, I say that 1000 rep points are just too much. I agree more of a with Wooster's 350 rep point suggestion. It's reasonable, and you would've accumulated reputation for it.

About posts, I see both 50 and 100 as reasonable amounts, not too much nor too less, so I would be fine with either.

I cannot be the leader for this, but I could help with approval and the like. That is, if this thing gets started at all of course.

It's easier to post away, then it is to receive a rep income, depending on who that user is, and if the others are not lazy on clicking the rep scale.

Does it necessarily have to be both requirements in order to access the photo album? Why can't it be one or the other?

These days, people can be insecure on whether they feel they should give rep to a user based on who that user may be or whatnot. But then again, rep is high, so it can be made also a factor as of why the reputation-point wise should be high.

I feel the post count should be higher than the reputation points that are required.
