Let me try to rewrite this in a way that I find easier to understand...

1. Write out your forum name. For this I will borrow Darkmaru (hope he doesn't mind

)

2. Remove the first and last numbers, so it ends up as arkmar

3. Spell out your favorite colour. In my case, it's black.

4. Does your favorite colour and your new changed username have any letters in common? For my case, it's yes. a and k are common to both my favorite colour and my username.

5. Then imagine writing out the alphabet so the a=1, b=2... right up until z=26.

6. See where your letter(s) come in this list and what number they correspond to. So we get a=1 and k=11.

7. Then we add them up so 1+11=12.

8. Here is where it gets complicated. If your number is not even, head straight to the spoiler. If it is even, divide it by two, and then by any other number that goes into it.

So 12/2 is 6 and 6/2 is 3.

There we go, three is the soul number!
