I've said it many times. Kabuto = Best spy in the Naruto series. Retrieving the sword would be a simple task compared to what he must've gone through to collect DNA from all the ninja he summoned.

But even though Kabuto didn't bring it back with Edo Tensei, Itachi will still have the Totsuka Blade and Yata Mirror because they're spiritual weapons attributed to his Susano'o. Since his soul has been brought back they should appear whenever he uses Susano'o.
