Not eternal. Just for quite a long period of time. >.>

Mood? Well, I'd say we would be able to do so a few dozen generations afar.

it looks promising bbut its like super hekka far so we have to find somesort of new tech to get us across the galaxy

maybe if we can move one atom at a super high speed and tie it too the ship maybe since space has no inertia it could just float forever?

Default Re: The Goldilocks' Planet.

It's cool that the planet was found but I think a bunch of people are overreacting at the POSSIBILITY that there is life on that planet and the POSSIBILITY it could support life. One scientist was saying how there's a 100% there would be life there. Nonsense.
There can be a 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 9999999%
chance of life but never 100%. It's only 100% if they actually know for sure and they
don't. Really the chances are probably much lower. Like 50% at best. There are still
many factors we don't know about the planet---just as there are factors of the earth we still are figuring out. The 100% chance of life is just sensationalism. They want
to celebrate in victory before the fat lady sings. The question of are we alone has
still yet to be answered. E.T has not phoned home and who knows if he ever will.

But that's the not the "bad" part (note: there's nothing bad about discovering this planet. This is of course an important milestone in human history. What is bad
is the reaction to it). What's bad is how some people are already making plans
for humans to live there. Even if you think generations from now we'll have the
technology to go there, it won't matter because we may not even survive THIS
generation. Don't be fooled. The world is not at peace right now. It never has been.
Everyday we are on the brink of total chaos and destruction. I'm not trying to sound
like some Doomsday Theorist. But if we allow the world to continue on it's path of
destruction then the results should be obvious. The problem with people making plans
to live there (not themselves living there but just people in general) is that people
are seeing it as an "escape" from the predicament rather than facing adversity.
Stop looking to the future for a solution when the problem is happening right now.

The system is only around 20 lightyears away. Even so, getting there is pointless, unless we find ourselves up against the wall and must send a generation ship. However, closely observing this planet will become possible in a reasonable period of time. It merely requires a very large array of orbital telescopes. A sufficiently powerful array will be able to image the surface. There are biochemical processes that can reveal with a high degree of confidence whether understood biology is present on the planet. These processes can be imaged by spectral analysis of the planet's atmosphere. We will known within two decades, at least (maybe earlier), whether this planet holds life as we know it. Of course, even if the analysis is negative, it could still host life other than the kind we understand. But this would be spectacularly bizarre life, since the whole point of this planet being important is that it exists in a band of space around it's primary which allows for the existence of liquid water. Such life would not require liquid water anyway, mitigating the importance of its orbital distance.

I like how you say ONLY 20 year light years away. As if that was nothing.

LOL. It is nothing ... compared to the 100,000 lightyear width of the galaxy. It's in our stellar neighborhood. You could get there in several human generations, taking the longview. Still, I did say it was pointless. That kind of planet is useless to us, even if it were only a lightyear away; it circles a red dwarf star, which would probably drive a human population crazy. In addition, it's five times earth gravity, with a planetary year of 37 days. With current tech, even using it for resources would be a giant fail.

All that could change if we achieve the tech to get their within a lifetime or less. Theoretically, there are ways.

When they manage to send people to mars then
I will consider the possibility of people even going 1 light year away.

Well, it's not like I mean to say "tomorrow we'll build a generation ship and fly to Gleisa 581!" I said "Theoretically, there are ways," which is to say that physics allows a way. That is a different proposition to saying anything about its fiscal, political, or engineering practicality.

I'll explore some of those ways, but this isn't the thread to do it in. Another has already been started for that purpose. Here is the post.

Yes. You are correct on that. But I think it would do our society good to strive for such things as long term projects. Pie in the sky perhaps, but the possible benefits might make it seem worth it on the other side.
