A wee idea

Not essential to the site in anyway. But rather, a nice addition to the site. People often make threads about leaving, going on holiday, when they will ba back etc. Of course, not everyone gets to see these threads. I know from experience Also, the threads usually are, and should be - placed in Off Topic. And we all know how quickly threads in Off Topic can disappear. They can be pushed to the bottom of the page relativly quickly if the section is active enough. Everyone knows how annoying it is when your friends go on holiday or whatever and are leaving for a month(example) and you didn't even get to say goodbye.

That's why I'm going to suggest a little notes box for everyones profile. We can put up little notes saying if we're going to be on holiday, away from the forum for a certain amount of time. Or whatever. It just means, someone can look at your profile and say " Oh, they're away right now. " That would be a very useful feature. And really helpful for all of us. You mods could also leave little notes like " I'm currently working on doing ___ with the forum, it should be ready in ___ days"

I'm sure Admins are totally busy atm. But if you ever had the time. Maybe you could perhaps make this happen?

Its a good idea but I think you can already do that. In the location thingy.....Just put "away for a month" and its the same thing.

It's not just for location. It's for absoloutly anything. It will just have so many uses

You can do this with signatures. Just use them to leave whatever message you want.

People usually don't look at siggys for messages like that though.
Also, it takes up space in your siggy for whatever else you may wish to have. Especially for people who totally fill their siggys with stuff.

I like this idea. :P So basically you mean like a status? What people use on myspace and facebook? I've seen it on many other sites like this. And couldn't there just be a filter so people don't put bad stuff? lol

Change your "Location" to "on vacation", or whereever it is that you're going. It works for me.

Though you can accomplish this in the ways described thus far, it's a 2 minute thing to do, so I'm not necessarily opposed to a 'status' field under peoples names. I'm pretty sure I can make it an either or thing, like "Active" or "Gone be back soon," or I could easily leave it as a fill in yourself like the rest of them.

Personally, I hate the status function of Facebookish sites, as everyone's is always set to something cleverly uninformative and dumb, but I know alot of people like it.

I was thinking of a Mood setting, that goes under your Rep bar or somewhere on there.

You could program things into it and not let people write what they want to make it Emo proof and keep curse words out.

cleverly uninformative and dumb pretty much describes the majority of locations really it would just be another location thingy except their would be less "STALKER!1!!111!!" and more random stuff that plays almost no part in the topic of it

Ugh. I guess. And its not so much the curse words that are bad, as they can be filtered. It's more stuff like " I think ___ is a troll, I hate him and he should be banned " stuff thats more the problem to moderate :S

Sort of. Except, its intended for useful notes. Not just to let other people know how you're feeling , or what you're doing.

If I changed my location to 'California' people would assume I live there. Also, people don't usually think to at locations for these kind of messages. Furthermore, this notes box isn't limited to just saying if you're on holiday. It has loads of other uses too

I love it. Only problem I can see with it on this site is that people may leave spiteful comments, which obviously can't be filtered or stopped. Unless a mod/admins looks at it. It might come down to mods or admins doing it for you :o

You could do that with this notes box too though. Also, a Mood setting bar below your rep - would be revealed to everyone. Not very private. If someone was interested to see where you are/any major accomplishments you have made for the forum. They can go to your profile. Chances are if they look at your profile. They're someone you know well, and probably like.

Like I said, it'd be a 2 minute thing to implement, so it isn't really about 'work load.' Since people can currently ruin our day by changing their location to say whatever the hell they'd like, it isn't really any more modding either. People still aren't allowed to ruin our day in their location, and they wouldn't be allowed to ruin our day in their x field either.

I think the best policy to run with for now would probably be allowing users to edit their sigs and locations to reflect they'll be out for a week or whatever, and see what comes of it. If they can't handle doing that, or wouldn't think to use it, then they probably wouldn't be able to handle an additional field either.
