Another thing i thought of, I'm pretty sure people always have ways of saying "I'm the greatest" it just doesn't come in verbal forms. Think about it, what happens when you win a race or a championship or any competition for that matter? You get a trophy, you get a medal, you get a ring, you get a friggen oscar. And then you put those relics on display in your home, on a shelf, or in a glass case. Isn't that just another way of saying "look at my achievements, look at what I accomplished because I was the best!" It might not be as loud or in your face as shouting from the roof tops but isn't still bragging in a sense?

That's a good point. It's more acceptable, but it's still bragging. I just realized that a lot of people brag on a daily basis, it's just in what way you do it that matters to people (i.e. having a family portrait, that's bragging to people how nice your family is, or at least that they take a nice picture lol). Like I'm sure Usain Bolt probably has his gold medal hanging up somewhere, I'd count that as bragging, just on a less obvious level. To be the best and not brag would actually be pretty difficult. You'd need to have no pride in your skill, or barely acknowledge that your the best. If your the best at something, and it's socially accepted to hang your medal on a wall, or put it in a case, why wouldn't you? (unless you don't want to brag, see my point)

Yes, actually. I completely agree. It's just like maturity. Those who are the most mature don't brag about their maturity-- people just know. Others, on the other hand, who are insecure and not at all mature, brag about being mature. Though they aren't.

What about Michael Jordan? He's the best basketball player in the world, yet in his hall of fame speech he took shots at people that doubted him, or treated him poorly in the past, by rubbing in their faces that he's the greatest. He was cut from his high school basketball team, and he started bragging to the person that took his spot on the team, saying he'd beat him in a 1 on 1 match.

And really? There is where'd I'd apply the "when your the best you don't need to brag" concept. Honestly, I thought that was really petty, but that's just me. And it wasn't a private conversation, it was in front of everyone there and on television. That's embarrassment on a national level for something that isn't that serious. If the guy slept with his wife or something then I'd be like "ok I understand", but he just got a spot on a basketball team. That's one of those moments where your just like "Dude... get over it".

People brag all the time and it doesn't have to come from a bad place. You're basically taking pride in your own achievements. Yes, there's a line where it become obnoxious, but what's wrong with being proud of something you've done? Parents take pride in their own children all the time, just look at all of the "My child is on the Honor Roll" bumper stickers. It's like what Leaf was getting at with the family portrait thing, it all comes in various degrees.

I dont think that counts as bragging. Its not like you are inviting people to look at stuff in your house. When bolt hangs his medal somewhere in his house that doesnt count as bragging that is entirely different thing called "being proud of your achievements". Bolt wont shove his medal in your face or something like that. When you achieve something then it is natural to feel proud of yourself.
For example consider a soldier who has lost a leg in battle but has won gallantry medal for his services to the country. Now if he hangs that medal in his house, will you call that bragging?

To me, bragging has elements of exaggeration and untruth woven into the statements.

There is a huge difference between saying you are the best at something and being able to back that claim up with the skills to match your words and saying you are the best but not being able to validate your claim.

If one truly is the best at something and says so, I don't consider that bragging, just stating the truth. To speak the truth is not bragging, but stating a fact. Conversely, if one is not the best at something but claims he/she is, then I would consider that bragging because it is not true.

Not necessarily true, but it is typical that the best at some things don't brag, while others claiming to be are the first to jump up and boast.

It falls on a person's personality really. They can be the best (at least at the time, someone will always come along and blow your record out of the water) and still brag. So it isn't necessarily a rule.

And as you said, it is more to keep the attention that they seek but have not necessarily earned on them.

Right. That's a good point. There's a difference between pride and bragging. I was just trying to make a point by saying that the line between the two are very unclear sometimes. Your right in saying the example I gave probably wouldn't be considered bragging. But I was trying to show how the two (pride and bragging) can sometimes be synonomous (I just gave a bad example :P).
