You're probably thinking of the wrong games

I'm talking about

Ok...

Mario has the following stages

Normal Size--Mario is small here. His only attack is jump and squash.
If Mario is touched he will die (unless he has star power). Will die if
he falls off a cliff.
Mushroom Size--Mario is much bigger than his normal size. His only attack is still jump but if he is hit he will reduce to Normal size (unless he has star power) Will die if he falls off a cliff.
Flower Size---Same size as Mushroom size. Shoots fireballs that bounce.
Only shoots in front of him. Can still jump. If he is hit will be reduced to
Normal size (unless he has star power) Will die if he falls off cliff
Star Power (can be combined with any of the above) Makes Mario invincible for about 10 seconds

Wario has the following stages

Small Size---Wario is small here. Only attack is jump and squash. If Wario is touched he will die (unless he has star power) Will die if falls off cliff
Normal Size---Wario is bigger here. Same size as Mushroom Mario maybe a tad bit bigger. He can jump but he can also ram into enemies and will not
be damaged unless the enemy has spikes or something like that. (Unless he has star power) Will die if he falls off cliff
Viking Power---Same size as Normal size. He can know cause enemies to flip upside down and and be paralyzed by stomping the ground. Can also
use his Viking hat to cling to the roof.
Dragon Power--Same size as Normal size. Can breathe flames but they are short distance. Can shoot in fire or water. Only one direction
Jet Power---Uses a jetpack to fly short distances.

Though the comparisons may be unfair...because Mario is stronger in Super Mario World. Especially if he has Yoshi.
