The first part: exactly. Humans thrive because of war and what it has forced us to do. It is the human equivalent of survival of the fittest, except that now it has evolved to not affect just an individual but an entire nation and its scientific level. The countries with the most developed and most invested in sciences will more than likely be the most prosperous and powerful ones.

As for the second one: Not really. If anything war has actually accelerated the rate at which we will get rid of diseases. We used our combined knowledge of so many things learned from and developed of war to make medicinal microbots. Some microbots have been made to treat cancer have been tested that show much higher efficiencies than every single other treatment available with few-to-no of the side effects, and given another 10/20 years such a machine could be perfected into a perfect all-disease killer. Too bad that those things are still in the experimental stage, have yet to be approved, and it still costs a shitload to manufacture even a tiny amount of them.

i suppose war does push humanity past its limits

still though with the second part, thats not quite what i was getting at. all the time and funding used on war (the so called 'war on terror' for example) could be used on other things
