What is the ultimate purpose of the Sharingan?

Itachi said that there was an ultimate purpose to the Sharingan besides controlling the Kyubi when fighting sasuke. He then told him how Madara got the Permanent Mangekyou and that Uchihas have killed their siblings to make their Mangekyou permanent (how does that work if most Uchihas never even obtained the Mangekyou)?

So is that simply the "final secret"? That Uchihas kill eacother to make their Mangekyou permanent? Were there more Mangekyou users that we don't know about besides Madara, his brother, Itachi, Sasuke, and Kakashi?

Since most never obtained it...and to obtain it you have to kill the one closest to you...they had to kill eachother to get it in the frst place since they're close by being family and then kill again to keep it. Maybe it was to never obtain it in the first place to show loyalty to the family or something? Or maybe to set the family aside and be a part of a dominant bloodline. Who knows...
