That's true, but Gareth did technically save the villagers from robbery and cruel treatment from that motorcycle gang. xD

005 – Butterfly

We walked in silence for the next day. The conversation for the entirety of the seventy two hours was nonexistent, with the exception of Gareth telling us to hurry up, or telling us if he was making a stop. The walk was especially troublesome for me, as the two men were dead quiet, allowing me ample time to cope with the monstrosity I had become.
While it was occurring, I didn’t really notice what exactly I was doing. To me, it reminded me of running with Jan, just acting on impulse. We saw a crate, and we didn't think, oh hey, I should probably jump over that. We saw the crate, and our bodies reacted. That's how it was back in the town. As the people came towards me, Ephesus felt as light as a feather, and the blood and devastation I created meant nothing. I was in the moment, fighting purely out of instinct and survival.
What had I done?
I had just slew, in cold blood, dozens upon dozens of people. And for a while, I lived with it. For a time, I was okay. But then, when I saw the pain and agony spreading over Gareth's face, it dawned on me. Those people had families. Those people had purposes and lives they would never live to see come to fruition. All because I killed them.
But it got me thinking. By ending their soul lives, they entered the Sea of Consciousness, or whatever Gareth called it. By ending their lives, I sent them into the final resting place, a land without pain and suffering, without sadness and anger. I granted them access into a realm where they can, by Gareth's description, be in tune with the feelings of the entire world, and be in touch with everyone they know who has already departed. I allowed them to enter the perfect world.
So why did I feel so horrible?
Was it the blood spurting from the wounds? Was it the screams of agony as the bodies fell into the core? Or as the bodies burned, for that matter. Was it the look of shock on the leaders face? Was it the words of scorn from the mouths of the villagers? Was it the image burned into my brain of the bodies slowly descending to a bloody earth?
Why was I so emotionally harmed by all of this?
I did a good deed. I saved the town from the bandits. I ended their suffering in this life, while granting the bandits a life without suffering. I did a good deed, and, although it was my sin to bear, it's a sin in good faith.
So I should be happy.
Right?

As we walked, the desert slowly changed. The massive rolling hills of sand slowly diminished, becoming small dunes, until they disappeared all together. The scorched sands of time decreased slowly, leaving a cracked, barren wasteland beneath. We walked along the wasteland for several hours, until small tufts of grass spouted. We walked without faltering, never gaining nor decreasing speed. As the grass got longer, our pace slowed, and we came to a stop at nightfall. It was still warm, but more comfortable than the unbearable desert heat. Gareth said that a fire would be impossible tonight, as the slightest flame could send the entire wasteland up in flames, so we ate cold food in silence, once again. The night was long.
And with no one speaking, the seconds feel like hours.

The grasses grew, and with the grasses grew my confidence. The grasses turned to brush, which turned to sparse trees, which turned into a massive forest. As we walked through the dense land of trees, Khule attempted to make conversation once again, responded by silence from both Gareth and myself. We walked for hours.
The forest was beautiful. Trees reached up to the sky, with the patches of brilliant blue sky peeking through. Along the ground, moss covered rocks and roots made the path treacherous, but we walked on at a brisk pace. I never noticed nightfall coming, at least until Gareth finally stopped and sat down. With a movement of his fingers, the earth separated, making a fire pit. Khule went to gather wood, so I once again tried to start up a conversation.
"Gareth," I said, "can I ask you something?"
There was silence for a while, but Gareth finally gave in, sighing and turning to me. "Yes Lavernius, what is it?"
"You said that the Sea of Consciousness is a place without suffering and sorrow, without pain or agony, correct?"
"Yes, and I see where your getting at, and I will tell you - "
"Aren’t they better off? Those men we killed. Didn’t we do them a favor?"
Gareth was dead silent. "Tell me, boy. Have you ever heard of the butterfly effect?"
"The Butterfly Effect?"
"I shall show you then. Come. Follow me."
He turned sharply and walked off into the forest. We walked through the lowest level, dodging falling rain and birds flying overhead. After a brief period of this walking, the two of us came to a clearing of sorts, with an assortment of wild animals.
"Take out Ephesus."
I complied. "Why? What's the point?"
He turned to me slowly. A squirrel ran by, and he promptly stepped on its tail, pinning it in place. "Kill it, Lavernius. End its life. Send it to the Sea of Consciousness."
I was shocked. "But why?" I said. "What has it done to deserve that?"
"But did you not just say it would be better off? In a land without pain?"
"It would be, but - "
"Then kill it! Tis naught but a small squirrel. What purpose does it have in the world? Let it live in bliss and happiness!"
"I think I am failing to see the point of this."
Before I could react, I was pinned against a tree, axe at my throat. The speed with which he moved was insane. "I agree, you do not see the point. Tell me, what significance does that squirrel hold in the grand scale of life?"
"None! You said it yourself, it’'s only a squirrel."
Gareth threw me to the ground, and slammed the axe into the ground an inch from my head. "Wrong! Horribly horribly wrong. This is where the butterfly effect comes into being. Say we do kill this squirrel. How does this squirrel then provide for its family?"
"It can't. It would be dead."
"Exactly! So the family could starve too. Killing the squirrel could cause suffering for its entire family."
"Alright I get it."
His voice began to raise. "No Lavernius, I do not think you do. Wolves eat squirrels, do they not? And if this family of squirrels died, a wolf would go without a meal, and die in return. If this wolf was a father, it could not provide for its family, because it would be dead! And if this wolf dies, there would be nothing to kill the cattle of the farmer in the town over!"
"That's a good thing, isn't it?"
"In theory yes. But let us look at this from this point of view. More cattle means more prospecting thieves, who would steal from this man, keeping all the cattle for themselves. The rancher would not be able to sell his lost cattle, and would die from bankruptcy leading to starvation. However, however many sheep and oxen were stolen also equals the number of families who would spend another night hungry due to the lack of food. These people would starve, and quite possibly die! Do you see what I am getting at?"
"Yea...I think so."
"Exactly. Killing an 'insignificant' squirrel could quite possibly kill a town. Now imagine for a second what killing an entire gang could cause. Sure, the gang is better off, but because of it, an entire city may suffer the consequences in the future. Now I hope you realize what you and I did back there."
"But if you knew that would happen, why did you fight them? Why did you kill them and cause all that devastation?"
"I killed to protect the villagers. They had no need to suffer. The gang brought their own suffering upon themselves."
"But the villagers did suffer!"
Gareth was silent for a long time. "That ... was not supposed to happen."
"What do you mean? You chose how powerful that attack would be! You leveled a house!"
"I did not choose that strength. The length of that attack is supposed to be as long as I desire, and the depth is only fifteen feet, not to the earth's core like I had done. I was not focused though."
"Why weren't you focused? It was important, and you ruined a home because of it!"
Gareth's eyes became filled with both anger and sadness. His voice rose, as he screamed, "I know exactly what I did! I was not focused on account of you!"
I stopped talking. Because of me? I though. "What did I do?"
"Your sword, you named it Ephesus, did you not?"
"Yea, after my friend's last name."
Khule suddenly turned the corner, walking with firewood. "Hey boys! Time for dinner. I caught some rabbit back there. Shame it had to die, but we needed to eat, right?" He stopped, noticing the axe next to my face. "Gareth. Calm yourself. Let’s go back to the campsite."
"Your right," Gareth said. He stood, picking up the axe, and walked away from me.
"Wait!" I yelled, standing up. "Don't walk away from me, unless your going to tell me what Ephesus means to you!"
"I will not tell you,” said Gareth, "and trust me when I say that I never plan on telling you."

Sparks of electricity danced through Private Kearny’s vision, seconds before the massive arrow imbedded itself between his eyes. Private Ducharme drew his sword, diving out of the way of the incoming electric arrow.
"Attention all officers! We have a break-in in progress at Makai Generator Five! I repeat! We have a break-in in progress!"
Ducharme sprinted towards the intruder, who's glasses reflected eagerly in the dimly lit room. Ducharme swung his saber, but hit thin air, as the intruder launched himself into the air. However, he never came down.
Ducharme looked left and right for the intruder, but couldn't find him. When he decided it was best to look up, it was too late. A bolt of pure lightning struck down, frying Private Ducharme instantly.
Electricity danced along the man's feet, keeping him magnetized to the metal ceiling. He walked along the ceiling slowly, his jacket and long ponytail hanging down towards the ground. He had already capped the quivers of arrows at his hips, and as he made his way to the generator, the sound of his own electricity melded with that of the generator. He fell nimbly to the ground, and placed both his hands on the generator.
"Stop right where you are, by order of the Makai Imperial Police Force!"
The intruder turned, seeing six men staring him down, each armed with long spears. They were dressed in the attire of a police officer, dark black pants and a white shirt under a black vest. The vest was supposed to be sword proof, but the intruder knew better.
"Better watch out," he said snidely. "I pack a bit more punch than your normal baddy." As he said this, the intruder slowly uncapped his quivers, grabbing six arrows in between his fingers on each hand.
"Drop your weapons! Now!" screamed the leading officer.
"Relax, sir, he has no bow. He cant fire those," said the lowest rank.
"Oh, how naive you are. Oh well, it cant be helped." And with that, the intruder threw the arrows. Instantly, blue electricity coursed over the arrows, causing them to fly faster, drilling straight through the throat of each policeman. The men fell to the ground, all gasping for breath. "Trust me," the intruder said.
"In the years since Lady Fate gave me this power, I’ve never missed my mark."

"Sir, reporting in from Makai," said the officer on the phone.
"Yea, what is it?" said the ornately cloaked, greasy haired man.
"Well sir, it appears that Generator 5 of Makai is down. Taken out the same way as 7 and 6."
"You're sure it was him?"
"Yes sir, the video footage clearly shows his gift. He also showed his face directly to one of our cameras. If I am allowed to make assumptions, your excellency, I believe he wanted us to know it was him."
"Of course he did. Agravain was always one for theatrics. Thank you, soldier."
"It was my pleasure, Third Knight, sir!"
The greasy haired man hung up the phone and turned to his three companions. "We'll. It’s official. Our former brother is now Makai’s most wanted."
"Quit with the jokes, Gaheris," said the tall, studious looking gray haired young man. "He's becoming quite the problem, seeing as Makai only has four generators left."
"I agree with Lord Gawain!" said the youngest, and equally ornately dressed man. "We must give chase! We must hunt down Agravain until our last breath!"
"Quiet, Gingalain, or it will be your last breath," said the greasy haired man, Gaheris. He turned to Gawain, the tall studious man. "Please quell your son's passion, if you will. Now it appears, my brothers, that our newest brother, Gareth, has made contact with the entry from the Unparallel. He has yet to report in, but recent reports from our units in the desert report a small town was hit by small tremors, causing a house to collapse, undoubtedly Gareth's work.”
"We cannot assume that,” said Gawain, "as Gareth has shown no signs of this erratic behavior. It's highly probable that the occurrences were natural phenomena, and were set to happen anyway."
"Oh please, brother, if I may, will you stop spouting such nonsense? He destroyed an entire town before, what’s to stop him from leveling a house or two?"
"Gaheris, that is enough," said the fourth man, sitting at the end of the table.
All three men became dead silent. Gingalain, the boy, was the first to speak. "We are terribly sorry, Lord Michael. Please forgive our insolence."
The long blonde haired man at the end of the table slowly rose to his feet, stretching out his massive white wings.
"Oh please, Gingalain, please stop being so formal around me.
"I'm only an archangel."

CONTEST : Who ever answers with the significance of each knight's name, and that of Agravaine gets a free rep xD

Everything I was unsure of in the last chapter you fixed and made a billion times better. I also loved the ending. A lot. Seems to be a pattern with all the Knights of Fate having "G" names.

Sure, the gang is better off, but because of it, an entire city may suffer the consequences in the future. Now I hope you realize what you and I did back there." "But if you knew that would happen, why did you fight them? Why did you kill them and cause all that devastation?" "I killed to protect the villagers. They had no need to suffer. The gang brought their own suffering upon themselves." "But the villagers did suffer!" Gareth was silent for a long time. "That ... was not supposed to happen." "What do you mean? You chose how powerful that attack would be! You leveled a house!" "I did not choose that strength. The length of that attack is supposed to be as long as I desire, and the depth is only fifteen feet, not to the earth's core like I had done. I was not focused though." "Why weren't you focused? It was important, and you ruined a home because of it!" Gareth's eyes became filled with both anger and sadness. His voice rose, as he screamed, "I know exactly what I did! I was not focused on account of you!" I stopped talking. Because of me? I though. "What did I do?" "Your sword, you named it Ephesus, did you not?" "Yea, after my friend's last name." Khule suddenly turned the corner, walking with firewood. "Hey boys! Time for dinner. I caught some rabbit back there. Shame it had to die, but we needed to eat, right?" He stopped, noticing the axe next to my face. "Gareth. Calm yourself. Let’s go back to the campsite." "Your right," Gareth said. He stood, picking up the axe, and walked away from me. "Wait!" I yelled, standing up. "Don't walk away from me, unless your going to tell me what Ephesus means to you!" "I will not tell you,” said Gareth, "and trust me when I say that I never plan on telling you." ~ Sparks of electricity danced through Private Kearny’s vision, seconds before the massive arrow imbedded itself between his eyes. Private Ducharme drew his sword, diving out of the way of the incoming electric arrow. "Attention all officers! We have a break-in in progress at Makai Generator Five! I repeat! We have a break-in in progress!" Ducharme sprinted towards the intruder, who's glasses reflected eagerly in the dimly lit room. Ducharme swung his saber, but hit thin air, as the intruder launched himself into the air. However, he never came down. Ducharme looked left and right for the intruder, but couldn't find him. When he decided it was best to look up, it was too late. A bolt of pure lightning struck down, frying Private Ducharme instantly. Electricity danced along the man's feet, keeping him magnetized to the metal ceiling. He walked along the ceiling slowly, his jacket and long ponytail hanging down towards the ground. He had already capped the quivers of arrows at his hips, and as he made his way to the generator, the sound of his own electricity melded with that of the generator. He fell nimbly to the ground, and placed both his hands on the generator. "Stop right where you are, by order of the Makai Imperial Police Force!" The intruder turned, seeing six men staring him down, each armed with long spears. They were dressed in the attire of a police officer, dark black pants and a white shirt under a black vest. The vest was supposed to be sword proof, but the intruder knew better. "Better watch out," he said snidely. "I pack a bit more punch than your normal baddy." As he said this, the intruder slowly uncapped his quivers, grabbing six arrows in between his fingers on each hand. "Drop your weapons! Now!" screamed the leading officer. "Relax, sir, he has no bow. He cant fire those," said the lowest rank. "Oh, how naive you are. Oh well, it cant be helped." And with that, the intruder threw the arrows. Instantly, blue electricity coursed over the arrows, causing them to fly faster, drilling straight through the throat of each policeman. The men fell to the ground, all gasping for breath. "Trust me," the intruder said. "In the years since Lady Fate gave me this power, I’ve never missed my mark." ~ "Sir, reporting in from Makai," said the officer on the phone. "Yea, what is it?" said the ornately cloaked, greasy haired man. "Well sir, it appears that Generator 5 of Makai is down. Taken out the same way as 7 and 6." "You're sure it was him?" "Yes sir, the video footage clearly shows his gift. He also showed his face directly to one of our cameras. If I am allowed to make assumptions, your excellency, I believe he wanted us to know it was him." "Of course he did. Agravain was always one for theatrics. Thank you, soldier." "It was my pleasure, Third Knight, sir!" The greasy haired man hung up the phone and turned to his three companions. "We'll. It’s official. Our former brother is now Makai’s most wanted." "Quit with the jokes, Gaheris," said the tall, studious looking gray haired young man. "He's becoming quite the problem, seeing as Makai only has four generators left." "I agree with Lord Gawain!" said the youngest, and equally ornately dressed man. "We must give chase! We must hunt down Agravain until our last breath!" "Quiet, Gingalain, or it will be your last breath," said the greasy haired man, Gaheris. He turned to Gawain, the tall studious man. "Please quell your son's passion, if you will. Now it appears, my brothers, that our newest brother, Gareth, has made contact with the entry from the Unparallel. He has yet to report in, but recent reports from our units in the desert report a small town was hit by small tremors, causing a house to collapse, undoubtedly Gareth's work.” "We cannot assume that,” said Gawain, "as Gareth has shown no signs of this erratic behavior. It's highly probable that the occurrences were natural phenomena, and were set to happen anyway." "Oh please, brother, if I may, will you stop spouting such nonsense? He destroyed an entire town before, what’s to stop him from leveling a house or two?" "Gaheris, that is enough," said the fourth man, sitting at the end of the table. All three men became dead silent. Gingalain, the boy, was the first to speak. "We are terribly sorry, Lord Michael. Please forgive our insolence." The long blonde haired man at the end of the table slowly rose to his feet, stretching out his massive white wings. "Oh please, Gingalain, please stop being so formal around me.
