A VERY LONG anti-2012 rant (with FACTS!!!)

I've had enough of this 2012 crap. You people obviously don't do your research. You just jump on the band wagon with all the other crazy paranoid people.

The leading support for the world ending in 2012 is the Mayan Calander supposedly ending in 2012.
THE MAYAN CALANDER DOES NOT END ON DECEMBER,12 2012.
And i'm sorry to tell all you people that think the calander just stops on that date because they stopped making the calander. That is wrong. You people don't know how the calander works. In the this thread I plan to destory the idea that the Mayan Calander ends on December 12,2012. If you are weak emotionally and you think reading something against this belief will make you cry, then you need to stop reading this right..............now.



Now then, i'll just get straight to the point of why the calander doesn't end in 2012. The Mesoamerican Long Count Calander, as it is called, is broken up into 20 parts. Think of it as a month on our calander.
These parts are called b'ak'tuns, which last 394 years each. So one full cycle of the Long Count Calander lasts about 7880 years. Just like a month, right?
We are currently in the 12th b'ak'tun according to the Long Count Calander. On December 21,2012, the 13th will start. Which means, the rest of the b'ak'tuns have yet to happen. The 20th b'ak'tun ends on October 12, 4772. Roughly 2762 years from now. That is when the cycle will truely be complete.

Now that you know that, i'm sure you are wondering "Then why the -blam!- do people think the world is going to end in 2012?". I will now explain that part.
The ancient Mayan had a religous book called the "Popol Vuh". This book basically recounts the history of the world according to the Mayan religion. According to this book, the world we live in now is what the book calls the "fourth world". According to this books, the Mayan Gods destoryed and remade the world 3 times before. And it was always at the beginning of the 13 b'ak'tun. And, of course, the new 13 b'ak'tun starts in 2012.

So, why won't the world in 2012? Besides the Mayan themselves have writings of dates beyond 2012. On a panel of the Temple of the Inscriptions, an ancient Mayan Temple, there is writing about 80 calander rounds after the Palenque ruler K'inich Janaab' Pakals accession to the throne in 615 AD. A calander round for Mayans is 52 years. 80 calander rounds times 52 years would be 4160 years. Which would be in the year 4775AD. Which, is even into the next set of b'ak'tun. There are also other events that have been written out. According to that, then the world can't end in 2012.

So, what does this really mean? It means that most likely nothing will happen in 2012. The world will definately not end. I say "most likely" because of another guess at what the beginning of the 13th b'ak'tun might mean. A new beginning. According to the Mayan book the world ends, only to be made again. That doesn't have to mean everyone on the world dies. One interpretation is that an event of great change could happen.
Look at the world we live in today. It seems to be going straight to Hell at this point. War, starvation, and a variety of deadly diseases. I think that if anything at all will happen in 2012, it will be an event that will change the world completely. Something that will cause the world as a whole to move in a new direction. It sure does seem like that in 3 years, something very well could happen to change everything.
I still don't think anything will happen in 2012 though. But if you have to think something will happen, think that something will happen to change the world for the better. 2012 shouldn't be thought of as an ending, but rather a new start.

To finish off this thread, I will address the question of "How did Decemember 12, 2012 become such a Doomsday date?". The answer to that question is simple: people. Humans, as a species, have always been fasinated about the end of the world. From the very beginning, everyone has wanted there to be a definate date when the world ends. And now, with 2012 approaching, many people are preparing for the worst. Nobody is looking at the facts. Everyone seems to be jumping on the paranoid band wagon and not thinking and looking up the facts for themselves. And with the new movie "2012" coming out soon, things will only get worse.
I'm afraid of what the world will be like on December 20,2012. I hope there will be not mass hysteria and a massive amount of crimes being commited because people don't fear the consquences. I hope fear of the end of the world will show the best out of people and bring us together, but I don't know. Maybe fear for the date itself will cause something to happen that will change the world. Only other 3 years and a little less than 2 months to find out.

EDIT: Another reason to think that this 2012 is load of poo-doo. The Mayan's themselves are tired of this 2012 stuff. I read an article on the MSNBC website talking about how Mayan-speaking people are tired of people bothering them about 2012. And this calendar is basically extinct. No one uses it anymore. If the Mayans themselves don't believe the world will end on December 12, 2012, why do so many other people?

I mean Mayan-speaking people. The Mayan language still lived on, which means there had to be some Mayans survive, or at least people from lesser indian tribes that spoke the language. I guess ancestors of those ancient tribes might be called Mayans even if they weren't part of the main Mayan tribe.

ahh ok...but i mean, instead of worrying about this, they should be researching technology, trying to find Atlantis, trying to find the Fountain of Youth, to end pollution, fly in space.....oh and try to find out how to fly, and learn how to use special abilities w/ ur mind, like telepathy, and moving things w/ ur mind

Well, they say we aren't able to use all of our brain power, (I forget what the percent of our brain we are able to use is), so I guess it is possible. Maybe at some point in the future we will be able to move things with our minds.

Well done. I argued against the 2012 theory already on these forums, as it is a load of crap. You however, did so in a much more organized and seemingly more factual manner. In doing so, you also informed me of a few things as well (I had previously been going along with the common misconception that the mayan calendar ENDED on that date). That being said, I still stand by what I said, and agree with you fully. Thanks for making this, and a definite uprep to ya.

EDIT: Upon further observation, this seems to be a trend (2012, end of the world). There are a few threads now about the end of the world, I hope this doesnt become reminiscent of the adoption hell...
