What is your belief/opinion concerning the relative natures of good and evil? Do you believe that there is an ultimate good? What about an ultimate evil? Why?

No and no. There is no ultimate of either as they are not defineable. Both are matters of perspective. Best represented by war these things are opinions. All sides in a war feel they are right and that the other sides are wrong. This would not be possible if they were difineative properties.
Anyone can say what they personally consider evil or good, but there will always be someone who disagrees. There is no true good or true evil, it is all dependant upon situation and personal belief. There is no way to argue for anything else because like all things there will be people who are unmoveable in their opinion of the matter. Yet that view is only an opinion of an opinion in the perspective of a given situation. Therefore, it is meaningless. Last edited by Sabra Kusabana; 08-17-2009 at 04:47 AM. |

My belief is that good and evil are just words. They typically get used to describe what is either forbidden or encouraged by random religious or secular group for the purpose of societal control. I do not acknowledge any ultimate authority on either as they are both words created by and for the use of humans themselves. We in the US perceive the murder of non-Islamic people as evil just as Islamic nations perceived the crusades as evil. Given the fact that both sides believed they were fighting holy campaigns and were therefor beyond reproach. who as right? Both sides where murdering as many people as they could for their ultimate good (their gods). History is full of this nonsense. Most dictators past and present don't see themselves as evil when they order murders. They believe they are misunderstood tragic heroes or some such rot. Most governments believe they have a right to their place in society. Scratch that to all governments.
Is killing an animal for food an act of good? That animal would probably classify it as evil if it thought beyond trying to survive. Is killing a human that is trying to kill you an act for good? The person trying to kill you probably thinks they are doing so out some kind of self righteous belief and therefor believe you are evil to resist. What about theft? Some people steal out of mischief others do so to survive. Most secular and religious groups call stealing for any reason an act of evil. My belief simply is that this is a dog eat dog world and that the only real authority is the dog with the fullest stomach. Good and evil are words we use to make ourselves feel justified in our own lives and they serve no other purpose. There is not some ultimate arbiter or justice up in the clouds ticking off all the good or bad things you do on some karmic. There is no heaven or hell beyond hallucinations of people near death or on some drug. Simply put there is no good or evil beyond you point of view. People survive or they don't and there is no reason to try and justify anything they do. Last edited by ihazcetsup; 08-17-2009 at 05:09 AM. |
