I'm gonna go with Atilla Leonidas was in his late 60's and according to Damaritos could barely move one of his shoulders and suffered from breathing problems and apparently routinely pissed himself when working out or training due to his innards not healing properly from an injury he suffered twenty years earlier..

I mean despite all this he's a tough bastard but one of the biggest flaws in Spartan training was how utterly inflexible they were...individually they were okay fighters..it was only in a phalanx that they had their formidable legendary status.

so a guy not really used to fighting outside of formation...with health issues facing a younger guy, who's health is better and may have a reach advantage on him..equals Atilla baby shaking grandpa all over the place

I agree with that. Leonidas is overrated.

When Leonidas was in his twenties he led a division of Spartans to drive off Athenian pirates...proud and mighty Spartans were literally handed their asses by Oar men not even the ex soldiers hired by said pirates as security.

Leonidas got a lot better and he was a formidable General but he failed to reinforce the sheep herders pass even after he was warned of it..by the Phokans

also you know..holding a mountain pass that the enemy can only send at most five or six thousand men through at a time (with another five thousand several minutes away) when you have seven thousand soldiers as back up and all of them are better trained with better equipment and armor than your enemy then suddenly him holding the mountain pass becomes less "oh my god teh awesome" and more "Well you know of course"

seven thousand decently trained soldiers with top of line armor and weaponry led by three hundred elite soldiers each one with at least ten years (most forty) of experience most of which by that point had been division commanders and up (meaning all of them could take command of their allies mid battle giving them an insane advantage against the Persians whose highest ranking officers were held back by Mardonus the General in charge of the entire army at the behest of Hydrarnes IIRC the Captain of the Immortals who was kind of an idiot but the cousin of the Emperor so he couldn't ignore him) vs ten thousand crappy armored, with below average weaponry and medium to slightly above average training...who at times could not even speak the same language as their unit commanders...where they cannot maneuver themselves to the rear of their line to relax and bring up fresh troops while the Greeks can

and its an obvious combination perfect for a mega ass whoop'n

tldr: Leonidas is impressive for the stupid decision he allowed Dienekes his commander to make..which was to order everyone not Spartan or Corinthian out of the pass to "preserve" the troops and then held the pass for another twenty four hours despite the herders pass is..very impressive but its still not impossible given just how massive the gap between Greek and Persian armor and arms was

had he actually kept the rest of the troops there and actually blocked off the pass he could have held out for another five or six more days...and would have caused so much damage to the Persian army that even if they could still march after that..they'd of been completely destroyed before they got anywhere near Athens by Corinth, Athens and Sparta

great victory...but because he failed to use the tools he had properly...arguably he caused the burning of several Greek cities and allowed Athens to become the dominant power post Platea

so you know...he kinda derped
