Well, I believe it was a setup to probably one of the most AWESOME battles ever (Shikamaru Nara Vs. Hidan), but it was probably also to show how much more mature and grown up Shikamaru has become. Each loss has only made him stronger, and he learned from his mistakes. It was to show that Shikamaru could handle the loss of someone close to him without getting himself recklessly killed in revenge. It also showed the darker side of the story, because in the ninja world, success is never garunteed. It was certainly sad, but was not in the least bit uneccessary.

I think Kishimoto killed Asuma to show how he (Kishimoto) wasn't afraid to kill off good guys as well as bad guys. If you think about it, Asuma was one of the first good guys to be killed off (Chiyo was a good character too, but she hasn't been around long enough to have the same impact of Asuma'a death. Asuma was the first good guy to die who has been around for most of the Naruto series)

For the younger character's like Shikamaru and Naruto to "grow up" and fully realize their potential, it is necessary for their teachers to be gone and unable to protect and guide them. They have to find their own way.

This is a common element in storytelling, especially heroic storytelling. The hero characters must always complete their journey without the aid of a teacher or mentor.

I believe it had nothing do with showing he wasn't afraid to kill off favored characters. In fact, I've readf somewhere that people were so upset at Asuma's death that they sent fan letters asking him to kill off Hidan. And thus Shikamaru Vs. Hidan happened.

I HIGHLY doubt he would kill off Hidan just because a few fan letters. It was part of the plan he had in mind and just happened to coincide with the fans.

well fan mail is powerful because george lucas was going to kill luke and they sent him fan mail that if he killed luke they were going to kill him so he killed chewbaka instead( in the books)

Well, I do agree, but I think he at least changed the story a little bit because of those letters.
