well it's less magic and more Chi and intrinsic knowledge, Galadriel for example was able to create a barrier around her kingdom that could do anything from altering the weather to holding off entropy and slowing down time - she could destroy entire fortresses and the like- she had top notch telepathic resistance

her teachers Luthien and Melian could do these things on a far grander scale to the extent that Luthien could put entire islands of werewolves to sleep with her songs..destroy the surface of said Island and end winter changing it to spring

Gandalf also did a lot more in that scene when he said "i am a servant of the sacred fire" he was literally calling on the powers of a semi omnipotent to enhance his barriers

magic has to do with what you know, your knowledge of the world. Sauron and Saruman originally were Maiar in the service of Aule the god who literally built the universe- they helped them build it they can..shape and change the world through that knowledge and their will

magic in the tolkienverse..essentially is you using your spirit and your knowledge and your will to..affect the world around you and it..can corrupt and damage you or deplete you (it did both to Sauron and Morgoth) if you use it in a negative context. Power comes from the soul..from the spirit

its a mix of Chi/chakra from hindu and Chinese mythology and divine will as envisioned by old school Christians and Nordic and Celtic pagans..

it's why Elves get pissed when you call magic, magic to them its like a generic term for evil..which they consider "using your power and your knowledge to force and corrupt and change"

The Elves can their magic lore..The istari..don't really give a damn what you call it

The Valar banned the Istari from using their divine powers to their fullest extent forcing them to channel it through mannish bodies (bodies that last thousands of years ) they were to inspire and use their magics to manipulate and undo the influences of the enemy..weaken his forces in the coming tide

its Why Gandalf helped Thorin and Bilbo..because destroying Smaug and restoring Erebor would mean Sauron couldn't use a Dragon..that would be game ending.

Gandalf facing Durins Bane was another..part of that

think of your character as a essentially a minor god temporarily made into an ageless quasi immortal human/Elf (they look like both species) given a divine mandate to help the mortals overthrow the Dark Lord

it's not about good or evil, darkness as you describe it in Tolkien mythology is essentially the void outside life. Unless you serve Irmo or Varda would go for his darkness powers without him being evil

Name: Grizglas
Race: Beorning
Apperance: Grizglas is a very tall and broad man.
Spoiler:

Background: Grizglas is a large man with a booming voice, he grew up among the warriors of his people and is skilled in the use of axe, sword, and spear. Having fought many battles against the dark races he became well known among his people and received a farmstead for his victories, he had come to settle down and even took a wife. For him life now consisted of hunting, fishing, and tending horses, but this all ended when an orc warband razed his home destroying it and murdering his family. Grizglas swore that he would have revenge and tried to convince the leader of his people, Grimbeorn, to go to war, but his pleas were rejected and so Grizglas left the fords of his land and traveled to the cities of men and elves to find a way to strike against the darkness.

It's passive illusionary magic, which I made up before knowing saurumon could do it at will.

e.e What is this? The movies really sucked if this wasn't even touched upon. Alright I'll be changing my character's concept then.

Firstly I had some questions in red,but what's really got me is the part about the dragon. What exactly is the significance of one and why weren't there others besdies the hobbit story?

Secondly this knowledge thing, it's hard to grasp.

It's mostly Silmarilion. That would make a movie...
It's the essence of the Tolkienverse cannon, the core of the story. Really nice.

Questions for The Immortal Watch Dog:

1. Can my character (a pureblood Númenórean commanding a mercenary warband in Rhovanion), have any magic abilities or are Númenóreans restricted to their physical powers?

2. Given that I wear Númenórean weapons and armor, exactly how well does that compare to Elven or Dwarven weapons and equipment?

for example Morgoth the original big bad wanted to rule the universe, when he realized he couldn't do that he resolved to completely destroy creation

Sauron was always obsessed with order not so much evil but the destruction of chaos, rigid control of nature and the universe not freedom. He saw mortality and evolution as an inherent threat to what he helped create. His goal was always to..control life, control matter, control space, control time.

ever seen Star Trek Deep Space 9? Think the founders..taken to an insane extreme also if they were all as I said mad scientists/engineers

tldr: Morgoth was a nihilistic omnicidal force of death and darkness Sauron was a mix of Alexander the great, Adolf Hitler, Doctor Mengele, Albert Einstein, Frank Lloyd Wright and Socrates

the Barrier was not omnipotent it could be breached. But Galadriel was an elf born early in the first age she's older than the sun and the moon and older than the concept of time as an entropic force..she remembers an immortal universe..she understands time in ways we don't because she literally existed before it was invented and witnessed its creation

her training under Luthien and Melian and her Elvish Ring of power let her..tap into it

Dwarves and Elves both predate time itself..while they can't control it at will they can effect a sort of cosmic embalming that holds off the passage of time and its effects..within objects and in the case of the Lady of light..across her realm

Sauron and Saruman could make explosives and the like because they were first minor gods in the service of Aule the Hephaestus of Tolkien lore they literally had a hand in creating every subatomic particle every piece of matter and energy in the universe...further for Sauron the concept of "heat" and "cold" came from Morgoth himself..Sauron was his second in command when he defected..learning from two of the divine beings who had their hands..in everything..and all the guys knowledge and power increased ten fold

it's easy for Sauron to BBQ someone because he understands..fire because they created it..same for any Maiar

its..essentially them looking at a creation they helped build..and knowing how to manipulate it..based on that fact

with Elves and men..and Dwarves it's more "using their will and their spirits to change..the shape or substance of a thing

Galadriel destroying Dul Guldur comes from her power her ability to use her knowledge and her energies to level matter and ruin it. Elrond literally hurling a river at the ring wraiths comes from his..own spiritual power his own knowledge of his lands, his ability to "push" a river "make it angry" and cause it to explode violently at someone..

mind you these are the most powerful of elves and Istari

you have minor stuff like..Aragorn using his own innate magic to speed up healing, and to see through deceptions and the like.

your guy very well could be specialized in it if he served of those two gods..Saruman's voice magic and mind rapery is the equivelent of a carpenter

they were Morgoths nuclear bombs - brilliant horrific monsters some beautiful and elegant like Smaug and some deadly and manipulative with hypnotic powers like Galurong...others like Ancalagog the Black dread were simply sapient weapons of mass destruction. in that linked image by the way that ship flying at it? Yeah the pilot of that ship is Earlendil , the father of Elrond and Elros (Elros being Aragorns maternal great, great, great, great etc grandfather) flying a UFO built by Cirdan(who depending on the sources also fought on the vessel) and empowered by a silmaril a jewel containing the energies of creation inside

and by the way that Scale isn't accurate Ancalagon wasn't that small he had a 27 mile wingspan and no that wasn't a typo..he literally shattered three mountains bigger than mount Everast when he fell down after being killed by Earendil and the Eagles- he was so massive his bones became part of the foundation of the Himalayas

Smaug was the last living Dragon he was..a tiny thing compared to the black one, he was more in the line of Glaurong a suave manipulator, he likely was the equivalent of a wing commander- leading a squadron of other flying Dragons in battle against the host of Valinor

and as small as he was he was still some 400 or so feet long with a two hundred foot wing span- that could cause Katrina level wind gusts

Gandalf wanted Thorin to go to Erebor..because he knew if Smaug led the war in the north all hope was lost. He also knew Erebors resources in the hands of Orcs and Smaug would have been a disaster.

Or worse if Smaug started operating on his own..faced with three separate enemies (Saruman was working against Mordor for a good while) the chaos could prove a disaster for everyone..and another prolonged period of decline would follow.

Gandalf..sent them in there to dismantle the last atomic bomb as much as he did to free their home land

well I can understand, it's trying to conceptualize how your wizard would see the world, seeing as, that as an Ainui Bakon would have helped bring the universe into being..this world he sees would be in a pretty incomprehensible way almost like trying to look into a lovecraftian being

mind ye the Istari spent two thousand years in "mortal" form..with a brain not fully able to contain that knowledge..so much so that Gandalf forgot he was a Maiar..and couldn't even recognize a Balrog..as a fellow Maiar..and needed Legolas to identify something that was essentially a relative of his

so there's much about himself..he'd know..innately but not fully understand..or remember or even be able to process given he's essentially a super computer being asked to run through a tablet..

e.e

Yes I will stay an istari, but figuring out how the main ability in an interesting tolkien way will be hard. LOTR use of magic or whatever you want to call it whether it's written or in the movies is one of the best there is.

in a way it gives you more room to play around because you aren't really bound by spells unless you're a human or a Dwarf or a Noldor smith and all of those spells go more towards..enchanting weaponry, the magic your class uses is..not hindered in such a way

on the other hand..you really are limited by who and what you are and your own personality flaws and the like- destruction being far easier than creating..and creating being taxing and spirit consuming while destruction tends too..corrupt the corruptible

Name: Bakon altanis

Allegiance: Istari, lower maiar of aule and yavanna

Description: Bakon, also known as petkutaja(trickster) is typical in appearance for his kind. He's old and slightly decrepit. A mere glance at his pale skin suggests he hardly ventures in the sunlight. His wrinkled skin is spotted with scars and liver spots, the likes of which highlight his ages very well. His hair is fairly long, dried out and whiter than a full moon. His beard drops past his breasts and is riddled with knots and tangles and seeming. The few people who have actually witnessed bakon had said they had the strangest feeling about it. It was as if it harbored vermin, pestilence, and plague.

Traits and personality:
Although that's if he reveals himself. He gets his title of trickster originates from his veil which makes him appear however the eyes of the beholder wants him to be. For those who fear him they may see snakes crawling out of his beard. While a desperate lustful nomad might see him as a beautiful woman. Despite him being hermit like, he's a cunning deceitful person. He can instantly judge how a person sees him simple by their reaction toward him.

Although he's known for his illusionary trickery, he has extensive knowledge and understanding of the earth and life in general. He can use his knowledge of metals to forge weapons and armor of legendary quality with the simplest of raw metals. With but a slight touch, he can understand the spiritual flow the lushest of forests to the most barren of wastelands. The mightiest of beasts become tame and the most hostile people can be subdued.

Tools(besides staff):
Lohikäärmeen raivo: A light sword forged from the tooth of a dragon. It's hollow for lightness, but more durable than mythril.

Sorry fortaking so long, I jsut spent about 4 or 5 hours reading and rereading the lotr wiki. My initial idea was to be a low maiar of yavanna, but she's a freaking wimpy character. Plus I expect being able to make giant trees and vines grow at will would put me above elrond in power(and he's supposed to a top dog).

As for aule, his maiar aren't just limited to construction, so it's a bit too open ended e.e
