How could Pain have killed Fukasaku in the first place?

So, just before Fukasaku was killed by pain with universal pull, Fukasaku underwent sage transformation along with Shima. They needed to this in order for them to do their genjutsu. So since we know that sage jutsu heightens all of a ninja's senses, couldn't Fukasaku have broken the rod before it was stabbed into him just like naruto did when he transformed for his first time into a sage using his clone?
I really think Fukasaku should've survived that encounter

Probably wasnt able to absorb enough natural energy, or the fact that the genjutsu takes time to go into effect

@Souret Isn't one's reaction speed increased when in sage mode? We saw this countless times with naruto. So I think he did have enough time to counter the universal pull in some way.

@SU Fukasaku told Shima that they were ready with storing in the Natural energy (which was a lot for this genjutsu), and then got pulled by Pain straight away. None of the sage chakra was used

Simple. He was pulled in by BT and couldn't escape because he couldn't overcome the force of the gravity. IIRC no one has been shown to dodge BT throughout the entire series. The only one shown getting away was Naruto after he pushed off of an oncoming meteorite with chakra arms, but no one has dodged it.

He did not have enough time to block. Sage mode does increase speed but apparently his jutsu was just faster.

Fukasaku could've pushed Pain's arm out of the way before the rod struck him. Unless the jutsu was too fast for his reactions, which I doubt. No one dodged the universal pull, but his senses should've been heightened beyond the norm.

And it wasn't a great plot since he just came back to life a few episodes later.. At least with Kakashi, we cared more. But I suppose in the end, they couldn't use their genjutsu!

Pein was shown to still be able to compete with an SM Naruto, so he could also compete with an SM Fukasaku, especially when he's got the pull to boost his power. It's like throwing a ball up in the air and hitting it vs. the ball being thrown at you. It's easier to hit the ball you throw up because you were in control. Fukasaku just didn't have enough control and wasn't capable of dodging/parrying the rod.

Nobody has been able to resist bansho tennin with pure force.

I wasn't suggesting beating it by force, but I thought fukasama could've tried breaking the rod that pain used to stab him,. just like naruto did when he first went into his second sage mode

You cant dodge it. Naruto broke the rod but wasn't being pulled. Pein basically didn't know that Naruto went into sage mode so he thought he had the edge. with "pa" he was pulled so in that act his body was frozen. when we see Nagato doing that to Naruto in ep 298. Naruto used his chakra. though he couldn't physically move.
