Default 300 years ago...

At this very moment, the first of February, exactly 300 years ago, a remarkable battle was fought in the far edge of Europe. 43 brave Swedish soldiers held their ground against as many as 14,000 Ottoman and Tartar troops in a one-day battle that has been referred to as the Swedish Thermopylae. 4 Swedes sacrificed their lives in the battle, killing a hundred enemies and wounding twice as many. This thread has been made in honor of those 43 heroes, who fought against overwhelming odds to protect their king and their honor.

The heroes of Bender:

Description:
Spoiler:

Karl XII had come to the Ottoman Empire in search of an alliance against Russia, after losing a majority of his army to cold, starvation, battles and treason. After spending several years in a palace in Bender, the Ottoman government decided to break the alliance and force the Swedish king to leave, despite the fact that there was no safe way to travel through Europe for him at this time. His enemies were everywhere, and with less than a thousand men with very little ammunition there was no way for him to return home. On 1 February, 1713, an army of 10,000 to 14,000 men (depending on sources), attacked Karl XII's palace in Bender to capture him and kill any of his soldiers who tried to resist. In response, Karl XII ordered that his outnumbered troops would surrender themselves and let him fight alone, but 42 men refused this order. They were officers, bodyguards, cavalrymen, sailors, servants, and even a chef who all volunteered to fight and die alongside their king. As the Ottoman army approached, the 43 Swedes barricaded themselves inside a palace made for luxury and not defense, and the battle was a fact. At nightfall, the king was surrounded and disarmed by a dozen enemy soldiers and ordered his men to stop fighting so that their lives might be spared. Four Swedes died in the battle and about 10 were wounded, but the enemy casualties were much greater: 100 Ottomans had been killed, 200 wounded and even more had fled in panic or surrendered themselves to the Swedes. Although it was a defeat and had no importance whatsoever to the outcome of the ongoing war, the battle at Bender has become a symbol in Swedish history for courage, loyalty and self-sacrifice. 42 men defied a direct order to flee and survive, instead choosing to risk their lives in defense of their king. To the heroes of bender, and their ancestors today: your courage has not been forgotten.
