I always thought Obito's goal was more like Naruto's and that was to gain some recognition. In his conversations we hear that he is "the black sheep of the Uchiha," so I assume they sort of treated him like dirt. His plan here isn't so much to protect anyone, but he can mold the world into what he wants, meaning its a world where he can be the star without earning it.

listen to what he said when he first fell into madara's lyre? all he cared about was protecting his comrads... although his vision of becoming hokage was greater than that, protecting was his immediate/fundamental goal, and failing to do so is what turned him like this...

um, well yes and no (I think). He wanted recognition for sure, so he worked to become strong. At the core of it, I think his heart was good, but really, during the flash backs, you see all the work he does, and all the effort he is willing to put in..but its not so much about protecting anyone as it is to impress Rin (who remained fairly neutral).

At the end of it all, his desire is driven by Rin, and more so driven by what he can do in that world. When he said "I don't care anymore" he didn't kill Kakashi, didn't care if Kakashi lived or died because he would be alive in the world that he created. Obito had the desire to be strong and protect his friends, but that was a means to his ability to gain recognition.

He didn't want to just impress Rin, but also see her again, listen to her voice again, protect her, etc.

But on the other hand, he also wanted to show Kakashi that he's not that loser anymore, that he's become stronger and become Kakashi's rival. Also, he wanted to return back to his friends, his teacher, his village, so it wasn't just for Rin, it was in general for his old life with friends, but a better version of his old life.

While Sasuke, he is driven by the desire to avenge his clan and brother, not for his friends. He will get rid of any obstacle in front of him and his goal, even his friends.

But he doesn't understand that his goal is ridiculous, he doesn't understand that his clan deserved it. In a nutshell, Sasuke is like Madara when we talk about love towards clan and hate and revenge.

They can't forgive, or rarely can.

I dont think she will die i hope not but she did get quite a big role last chapter and thats usually a sign of character going or at least it happens alot in naruto.

Well so far she hasn't died and she is doing well on her own for now at least.

I think most of Naruto's friends are going to be killed by Obito even if they have Kurama's chakra and then he pulls a Nagato and brings them all back to life eventually

@kalmeast You know what, this is an excellent theory! I never really had thought of it this way before. My two-cents on this are as follows: Obito is obviously going to target Hinata. He will test Naruto's strength once again when naruto sees the girl that he "loves" die in front of his eyes. Obito's reasons are obvious for this, since he wants to see naruto's reaction, and try to justify his own actions when naruto loses control of himself. I think kishi might have Hinata die, and Naruto fail to protect her. Naruto's reactions there and then will determine whether obito will change his ways or not. It could end up being the same as the pain fight. And then the real madara will get pissed because the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique was to be used on him

If I were Obito I wuldn't aim at Naruto's close friends. First I'd take out other shinobis whom Naruto doesn't know, and after that his friends.
If he kills Kakashi, Hinata, Sakura etc. he'll just make Naruto mad.
And when someone is mad his power rises drastically.
Obito would just risk.
