I have to state here that chidori is a lightning nature jutsu and Naruto doesn't have that nature. Unfortunately, rasengan is a wind style jutsu and wind style is more powerful than lightning style when pitched against one another in a jutsu battle. Therefore, I'm voting for rasengan.

Rasengan Vs Chidori

1. Damage: Rasengan wins!
The Chidori is mainly used for penetration while the Rasengan does damage to the surrounding and also provides penetration.

2. Stealth: Rasengan wins!
The Chidori gives off light and sound so it can easily give away your position while the Rasengan makes no sound at all, but still gives off a bit of light.

3. Usability: Chidori wins!
The Chidori can be controlled so that it only damages that target while the Rasengan can injure people around the target given that there is only 1 enemy.

4. Time: Rasengan wins!
The Rasengan can last indefinitly while the Chidori expires after some time. (Not counting Justus evolved from them both because Rasenshruniken lasts for only a few seconds, also given that the user stays concentrated.)

5. Stability: Chidori wins!
When you lose control/ get distracted the Rasengan will unravel while the Chidori stays the same.

6. Usability (training): Draw!
Both the Chidori and the Rasengan takes intense training in order to be mastered.

Result: Rasengan WINS!!!

Also I believe the rasengan's aesthetics are far superior.

Chidori looks cooler and makes a cool sound. I don't like Sasuke at all but chidori is one of the most badass attacks in all of Naruto imo.

And it's versatile.

In my opinion, if the mastery of Rasengan was fully developed at all palm of hands and feet. Especially if one truly specialize the feet, the Rasengan could be use as a mode of transportation.

Considering they're about even on power, based on who's using them when. But I'd give it to Chidori out of awesome appearance. But in all honestly, Kakashi's combination of the two is quite awesome.

Not lightning spear but regular chidori because thats all chidori has in terms of hand attacks... it needs to just slice straight through.

Don't like the sound feature of chidori. And rasengan does more damage.

As a note, there are some beast (jonin/kage/akatsuki level) earth users out there., chidori would be nice against them.

Since when is wind>lightning? Thats just a stereotype made by the naruto anime. Look at any other anime lightning>>Wind. The fact naruto has kyubi amount of chakra reserves is the only reason naruto's rasengan is stronger and he's the main character. Try the 3rd raikages finger lightning jutsu vs rasengan. >:] Then who pucks who. Really its awesome sasuke can still keep up with that rasengan, being the worf character and also going against the goku level haxxs.

That is only because it moves to fast to react to an opponents move. But it you wouldn't be charging so fast, that wouldn't be a problem. Any variant of Chidori wouldn't be incomplete because the user isn't moving e.g. Chidori Stream, Chidori Senbon, Chidori Spear (whatever it's called).

All honesty I choose rasengan. Yea chidori looks awesome but rasengan is stronger and more reliable. Chidori and its variants ARP meant for paralyzing and peircing something with some medical ninjutsu help you can survive from. Rasengan first twists your insides and destroys them then sends you spinning so fast your blood flow will practically stop causing heart attack not to mention the severe brain trauma caused from it rattling around that badly. All that made me think of was the time Kabuto got hit with the Rasengan. And the times (plural) Kakashi pierced through Haku.
