Well, the Mayans never said it was doomsday first of all. Kinda like you said, it's like an ending of a generation and the beginning of a new one. As for the future? I dunno; the end could be tomorrow or 1000 years from now.

It's actually the end of the Maya Long Count, which is just another phase in their calender which signifies the death and rebirth of their main god. After that, the long count just starts over.

My hopes for the future include us not getting instantly annihilated by the hostility of space.
