The rennigan allows the user to control the 5 basic element types. So, wouldn't that mean Nagato could have just combined water and earth to use wood style?

Well, most kekkei genkai are family oriented, such as the Ocular Jutsu or the Byakugan and Rennegan. However, many people from different lands know boil release, lava release, and so on. Who is to say after witnessing and practicing such combinations that Nagato could not have used Wood Style? He has the power to do so. He probably could have. Unfortunately, he did not have enough life left in him to find out.

No. Because rinnegan allows you only to use the 5 elements but not combine them.

When u are able to combine them its all different story - bloodline limit - Kekke Genkai.

But if we analyse this well, if because of some mutation or crossover a human borns with both the ability to combine to elements and in the same time possesing the rinnegan now we are talking about Kekke Touta which is combining of 3 kekke genkais

Kekkei Touta is actually the combination of three chakra natures, not three kekkei genkai. (i.e. Jinton is Wind, Fire, and Earth).

Kekkei Genkai refers to an inherited ability, most commonly dealing with the combination of two elemental chakra natures. There are plenty of people who can use both Earth and Water style jutsu, like Kakashi for instance, but they don't have the right genetic makeup to combine the different chakra natures. To use Wood Style you have to have Earth and Water chakra natures and the right genes-Hashirama's in this case.

Kakazu has all 5 chakra natures yet no kg

typo, I think he did really mean 2 nature chakras and a dojutsu. And then I repeated off the quote without thinking.

Hashirama, Danzo, Obito, zetsu, Edo Madara, And yamato are the only known people to use wood release
