I know the he's basically a hashirama clone, but why is that particular one so important?
The one that runs around with the Akatsuki?

It's been generally accepted that White Zetsu is the result of mutation of The first hokage's cells. That includes the one that follows Tobi and the clones during the war.

Although one can't help but wonder what is under that black cover over his body. Is it even relevant? Perhaps it is, that's why it hasn't been revealed....or probably black zetsu doesn't like sharing half his body with a naked white zetsu

I think he's a clone of hasharama's but they obviously have two distinctions white zetzu is very weak however he can make nearly infinite clones of white zetzu and they can absorb and mimic chakra's and he can absorb into the ground and is connected to nearly the entire shinobi world,,,,Black zetzu seems to be a more direct clone of hasharama with his strength more in tact for instance black zetzu can't make clones of himself or absorb charkra to do transformation jutsu but he can use mokuton and is very powerful in combat as he held off the mizukage and her troop of personal guards and I suspect he could have actually defeated her because he only willingly retreteated because naruto and bee were sensed and he only wanted the feudal lords to use to get bee and naruto

First, the plural is Zetsoo, no matter how you slice it.
Many white Zetsu? Or many white Zetsoo!

Also, they are aliens, discovered by Hashirama, and integrated into him first, creating the first Mokuton ability

The Juubi was actually the head Zetsoo, or the Mazaship.
People want to believe that Obito is Tobi, but Tobito is just fooling us, he's really Zetsoom

What if Zetsu is standing behind all of this? He is the real mastermind, who manipulated Madara, Tobi, Nagato... He rescued Madara, and later Obito. He "grew" big Hashirama flower.

Or he is simply meaningless character, and we won't hear about him again.
