Generations, worst story mode ever

Look, love the game. Can't wait to spend 100 hours playing this online.

But this story mode is seriously the absolute worst of any Naruto game yet. The first mistake is forcing players to play the single player to unlock the characters. Nobody likes this. Even people who like the story (how/why?) shouldn't have to put in 10 hours of gameplay just to unlock the game. It's a FIGHTING GAME. I want to invite my friends over NOW and I want them to pick the characters they want NOW. Instead I need to spend two nights playing this god awful story mode.

I have only played two naruto games before this one. Ninja Storm 2 and Broken Bond. Both of those had story modes that were actually fun to play. Although I think Ninja Storm was much worse than Broken Bond the epic boss battles gave me something different. Story mode in Generations? They should be ashamed of themselves. You just fight 1v1 vs the PC, no variety at all (except for the few awakened battles) while listening to a narrator retell the story we all know like the back of our hand. I love the bonus animation, thats awesome to see but it isn't a substitute for interesting gameplay is it?

Oh and COULD IT BE EASIER? I put it on the hardest setting right away because I remember how annoyingly simply UNS2 was. Well I have lost only twice so far and I only have 1 more stor to complete. Every battle is an absolute snooze fest.

Story mode should just be called "Chore Mode." What annoys me the most is that my two friends who are planning on buying this, are going to have to suffer through it also.

I'm sorry, but if it took you 10 hours to beat the Story Mode then there's probably something wrong with you lol

Yea, story wasn't great, but the rest of the game is pretty awesome, namely the character selection. Collecting all the titles and the cards and stuff, Tournament and Survival Modes, Online -- it makes up a pretty good game. Generations Story Mode was, imo, better than Storm 2's. Sure, there weren't boss battles, but at least there wasn't all the monotonous walking around.

The story was the ONLY good thing about Broken Bond, the rest was absolutely horrible.

Generations story mode was admittedly, pretty poor, but they cut out the open world thing to free up space on the disk for more characters and stuff like that.

The focus wasn't on story mode. Pretty much everyone knows this. And 10 hours for the story mode lol, it only takes about 4 hours, 5 tops if you're struggling.

And I think you should have to unlock characters, having all characters available at the start would be boring and pointless. You have to unlock characters in all fighting games.

Like I said I am totally not complaining about the game. If I had my way, I would never even touch story mode and not even care. But they FORCE me to play it. And it is so horrible. It's like they are making me look at the worst part of the game! If you want Story Mode to be an afterthought, fine. Look at Soul Caliber... But don't make me play it to unlock 80% of the roster! Come on.

Not sure how long it's taken me, Sure feels like 10 hours. But I have only lost twice and I am just skipping all the scenes and I am mad at how long it's taking.

So you really want to buy a game with no challenge or work at all, even if it's only slight?

I mean, Story Mode is maybe 4 hours. You're really complaining about playing 4 hours of something that isn't spectacular to arm yourself with stuff that you'll use in the next 50+ hours of gameplay?

I mean, for me, it didn't seem like a problem. The anime cut scenes were cool, unlocking so much stuff with each battle was pretty great, etc. I mean, complaining about 4 hours of something is kinda hilarious, imo.

I am not sure I can agree with that kind of thinking. Forcing me to play something that isn't fun, and as you just admitted "wasn't the focus" just so I can fully enjoy the game is absolutely absurd. This is a fighting game, the "fun" comes from competing. Not from unlocking the playable characters. I don't mind a few characters being locked, but to lock 80%+ of the roster behind this terrible single player mode? I mean if SP mode was fun or actually had anything to offer beyond lame 1v1 battles.

Also for the record MK9, SF4 and Soul Calibur all have the vast majority of the characters unlocked out of the box. This is the new standard in fighting games because the companies finally realized that the first thing people want to do when they buy a fighting game is get online and fight.

Are you guys serious? First, the story mode offers no challenge. I am playing on Super Hard and I am WALKING through it. Maybe if there was a legitimate challenge I wouldn't hate it so much. I am literally running the motions. Secondly, the challenge is to go online and play with the best players and have a fun time competing. Not spending 4 hours spanking the very easy AI just to give myself the opportunity to play online.

If the story mode was compelling I wouldn't mind as much. But the combination of a required SP campaign, which happens to be an absolute BORE is too much to bear.

The cutescenes are cool! I loved them. But you could have had the cutscenes and still had a decent SP story.

I feel like you are missing the point. Although I dont' agree with you, and I do actually do want all the characters unlocked in my fighting games, that isn't the point.

The point is, the story mode is very poorly thought out, and just plain old phoned-in. Here is the problem with this story mode:

We all know the story. 95% of people buying this game are familiar with the story. There is no mystery or sense of discovery when playing this. I skipped through the ENTIRE THING because I knew what happenend to Jiraya, and Minato, and Zabuza already. The other games got around this lack of drama by providing varied gameplay. This game provides nothing but simply vs the AI battles, the only variety being "Opponents attack +80%."

You guys don't need to make excuses for this game. We can all agree that story mode is lacking. It is a shame.

Trust me. This is not the worst story mode ever. You're just comparing it to the previous awesome story modes. The first Clash of Ninja/Ultimate Ninja games had the worst Story Modes. They were good in their time, considering that they were really the only Naruto games like that in existence, but even compared to Generations' Story Mode, they're horrible.

Don't complain about the Story Mode in Generations. It's overdone and it's annoying. You should've known that the Story Mode was not intended to be the focus of the game, so it's only natural that it wouldn't be good. Complaining about it won't change anything.

I didn't mind having to unlock the characters through completing the Story Mode. I breezed through it. The only thing that annoyed me was unlocking all of the support types for every character, but that didn't even take an unreasonable amount of time.

What's more, you complain about the difficulty? Would you rather the badly designed Story Mode of this game also be difficult to complete, only making it take 50% longer to unlock every character while forcing you to sit through the terrible Story Mode for an even longer amount of time?

Honestly, it isn't that bad. It's a very, very simple Story Mode that's easy to complete. In a game like this, it works because there isn't much of the story to expand on. If they had made a huge Story Mode, they would pretty much just be recreating Storm 1 and 2, since there isn't much that happens between where Storm 2 left off up to the start of the war.

Lmaoo, seriously! It cut off right before the Chuunin Exams, with a fight between Naruto and Lee. I was like... "...wow." It was the first Naruto game I ever owned, so I was content with it. xD

You say all of this like I don't understand why it isn't that great. Trust me, I do, but at least I can understand that the Story Mode wasn't intended to be this great piece of work. Like you said "ONLINE FTW WAHOO", more or less.

The story mode was perfect. -_- We all know the naruto story. We don't need to spend hours upon hours running around like storm 2. The story was short too. I swear if storm 3 goes from chapter 1 to the war I'm killing someone. If its the same story format as generations the ill only severely injure someone.

Generations is getting closer to becoming a fighting game. Most fighting games have little to no story anyway.
