Rock Lee vs Gaara

Me and my brothers are constantly debating about who deserves to win out of Rock Lee and Gaara in the Chunin exams. They keep saying Rock Lee should have won when he went 4th and 5th gates. Put your opinions down here.

I think Gaara could have won easy. About a minute into the fight Rock Lee trips on some of Gaara's sand at which point had a few seconds to to sand coffin him and sand burial but he does nothing -_-

Lee rightfully lost that fight anyway. Guy stepped in and saved him at the last minute.

The real question is who would win, now?

Gaara beat Lee last time, and now he's way stronger. He's also Kazekage. Lee can most likely open up even more gates than before. And we all know that the more gates you open, the more powerful you become. But using those gates puts an enormous strain on the body. Thats why Lee wasnt able to win last time. He flinched in pain and Gaara was able to slip out of the shell of sand to avoid the impactof the hidden lotus at the last second. But now there's the question whether or not Gaara could do that considering I dont think he has the armor of sand anymore.

But. The armor of sand makes Gaara's body weighed down, and therefor he cannot move very well. Thats why Lee was able to kick him into the air so easily. Not only that, but the armor of sand also takes up a LOT of Gaara's chakra to keep it active. But now that its gone, he has more chakra to perform more Jutsu. Such as the sand clone jutsu. So now, there's a bigger probability that Lee wouldnt even be able to get Gaara into the air because Gaara could just substitute his real body for a sand clone. Then Lee would just use up all of that energy beating up a bunch of sand. Then Gaara could finish him off. Not to mention, Lee is only a chunin, while Gaara is Kazekage and can use lots more Jutsu than Lee can. He knows sand Tsunami now, Sand Hail, Desert Suspension, and a variety of other moves.

So who has the better chances of winning?

I go with Gaara 100%

The question isn't about what happens after the exams, and Gaara's victory wasn't rightful - it was an oversight.

Gaara's sand armour is mentioned to take huge amounts of chakra and be breakable. Yet somehow:
--Lee blitzing Gaara causes Lee to lose stamina faster, forcing him to resort to gates.
--Five gate hidden lotus is tanked by Gaara's sand armour. If written correctly, Gaara would have passed out or died from chakra depletion in mid-air - or be knocked out by a hit that breaks through the armour.
And doesn't Guy intervene after the hidden lotus?

Yes Guy intervenes after hidden lotus.

Hidden Lotus opens up the first gate. Guy intervened after Lee had opened the fourth gate, I believe.
Gaara survived the impact because his gourd turned into sand.

It costs a lot of chakra to use sand armour but Gaara's chakra levels from my point of view havn't been specified yet. Gaara cushioned his fall with Sand and was still pretty messed up after that. How the fight played out I believe Gaara still deserved to win. Explain your points on why Rock Lee should have won and I will gladly attempt to provide a solution or counter arguement for it.

By feats, Lee should've won that fight, no doubt.
PnJ was the only reason Gaara won.

I actually predict Guy or Lee later in the story opening the gate of death against Madara or something. Why else would kishi introduce the last gate

I say Gaara still has and had the better chances of winning. He is more trickier than Lee. He has numerous cards up his sleeve, whereas Lee only has the gates. Which, lets think about this reasonably: the only thing those gates can do is kill or severely injure Lee.

Gaara still had the upper hand in that fight (don't get me wrong Lee is awesome and it was pretty close) but Gaara did deserve to win with the abilities he had at the time.

If Lee could only injure or kill himself with the gates, there would be no point in learning and using them. The idea is that they bolster the user's strength - up to tenfold or more. The fight downplayed the strength increase(I know Lee broke the floor by running, but the force of his attacks during eight gates release is inconsistent with this) while keeping the self-damage as normal or perhaps even increasing it.

And I wouldn't say Gaara is "more trickier".
The tricks are roughly as follows(not in chronological order):
-Gaara uses a sand clone to absorb the primary lotus.
-Lee removes his weights.
-The gourd is revealed to be made of sand.
-Lee opens the gates.
They're about even there.

And while I'm at it, I'm going to mention that Sasuke could get around Gaara's shield with fewer hits while at the same speed Lee used or slower - and that fight took place after Rock Lee vs Gaara, so Gaara had time to practice. Rock Lee lost because it was critical to the arc Kishi wanted to write for him.

Remember Naruto's observation when he fights Sasuke before the Chunin exams don't get me wrong Lee has awesome power but his punches are not as powerful as you would think due to the fact that he trained to the point of crippling his hands. And the main complaint is that Gaara's sand armour withstands the force of Lee's attacks. Yet you don't see where Lee is actually hitting so you cannot know for sure. Sasuke used the Sharingan to achieve Lee's speed and Taijutsu as he saw it was a weakness for Gaara. But unlike Lee Sasuke is not a cripple with his hands and strikes Gaara in places where the the injuries would be more noticeable and severe.

Where one hits doesn't affect how much chakra the armour needs to block it.
Even if one takes Lee's base strength at that point to be low, I pointed out that the gates massively improve it.
Lee's hands may be damaged from training, but his knuckle bones would also be made very, very dense from that training, and the arm wraps are a form of protection for his hand, even if it's only a little. Rock Lee's hands are not "crippled".
And the fact that Sasuke uses the same speed contributes to my point that Lee lost in canon only because Kishi wanted him to. Something about representing human frailty.
Gaara being weak to blitzing should have let Rock Lee win, but it didn't. I don't see why Rock Lee stopped blitzing him and tried for the lotus in the first place - keeping that up, he could rather easily have exhausted Gaara of chakra, which would have made the winning blow a piece of cake.

Guess you guys forgot that Lee was about to punch a hole through Gaara in mid air when Lee twitched from pain for like a millionth of a second and Gaara made a sand clone. That was BS to the highest degree why would Lee flintch from pain if he is an extreme fight. If Lee was out for blood that fight; no weights, no Guy approval for gates, and no mercy. Gaara would have been dead or Lee would have won. That fights pisses me off more than any thing else because Rock Lee at the time would have bashed any genin's face in.
