They're land owning nobles in Japan. That's like feudal Japan, though. I don't see the point of them in the series. >__> I just know they're all ugly.

I think they are supposed to be king-like figures in that they govern all the political /social matters in the shinobi world. And the ninja villages would just be their army.
Which is strange because the samurai would fit better for that role but they are the independant ones O.o

Pain said it best in one of the shippuden episodes, I don't know the exact episode or the quote, did try to find it though but it's when Hidan asked why they needed money and what they were doing he tells him his plan and Hidan says "We'd just be like the other ninja villages except without a country to support us" then Pain goes it's the opposite.
So in other words they're completely useless and it was dumb they were included in the story anyway Asuma should've just been part of the Hokage's guard instead of the fire daimyo.. and the ninja village's should've owned their land and the Hokage in chage of the country... |
