They were called sannin for a reason. They were really strong. They'd be stronger if they actually worked together

They where extremly strong.. Jiraya defeated 3 bodies of Pain, while Pain had a lot of Information about Jiraya. Kakashi needed a Team to defeat one of them, while fighting only against 2. And Hanzo was killed by Pain, who was extremly feared.
Naruto was maybe only able to defeat Pains 6 paths, cause Pain needed him alive and was already weakened from destroying whole Konoha, the 9 Tails Chakra took over Naruto and Naruto had more Information about the Rinnegan then Jiraya had.
And Orochimaru defeated the 3. Hokage (who was weakened cause of his age) who was called "God of Shinobi".
Tsunade is the best Medical Ninja we know right now, and her Taijutsu is at least as good as the Taijutsu of Orochimaru.

The Name Legendary Sannin really fits for them. Especially if all 3 of them Fight in a Team.

They were called the legendary sannin because:
1) they are a team of three.
2) they were all trained by the third hokage who was called the God of Shinobi.
3) all of them added something new to the shinobi world:
--a) Tsunade: Medical Jutsu
--b) Jiraya: He was the first one in Konoha to use the sage mode.
--c) Orochimaru: Invented a way to stay immortal.
4) The efforts they did in the 2nd world shinobi ninja war.
5) The Sannin are all masters of the summoning technique
6) each one of them is at the level of kage.
