This forum had a chatbox feature where we can talk in an IM style setting to other members online at the time.

We already have that, your average user just can't see it.

As nice as it would be to let everyone have the feature, we'd end up having to impose the same strict ruleset in there that the rest of the forums follow, and considering how chaotic it would get, it'd be a pain in the ass to moderate. Most just use Tiny Chat anyways.

Chatboxes are very server intensive, average users just don't seem to realise that they use up tons of resources. It is good that it can only be seen by the staff, since if everyone could see it, the server load would probably increase to 100 and crash.
