Shikamaru at the most knows how to make regular clones, which are basically illusions that a high level ninja can easily detect. And even if he did make a clone, Itachi would make one too, being that he's far better at manipulating clones than Shikamaru ever was or will be. Clones don't solve everything.

No i mean, if a clone takes his place genjutsu wouldn't work i believe (didn't work on Kakashi's)

But if he did play? I'd say Shikamaru'd win (unless Itachi uses Genjutsu, the little cheater)

Of course Itachi will win. He became an ANBU Captain at the age of 13, for crying out loud, he is way more intelligent in battle tactics then Shikamaru is or probably ever will be. He'll teach him a new lesson, like Asuma did. Something no one ever thought about before.

This is how I imagine this game of Shogi.

I know that Itachi isn't stupid, but Shikamaru has a 200 IQ. Given enough time and information, he can plan out a battle move for move like he did against Temari. He can probably do the same in shogi, which was how Asuma first found out how smart Shikamaru really was. Unless Itachi cheats and genjutsus him, I think Shikamaru could pull out a win.

Itachi, with zero knowledge of Nagato's abilities, managed to figure out how to disable Outer Realms power and exploit Chibaku Tensei's weakness.

Shikamaru, on the other hand, was only able to crack Jiraiya's code of Pain's true identiy with assistance, and offered no more knowledge during the Pain arc.

Itachi also became a Jonin before Shikamaru even graduated from the academy.

One of the few characters who is likely more intelligent then Shikamaru.

Correction. ANBU Captain, he was never a Jonin he was always a Chunin. But I have to agree with you that Itachi is one of the few people besides Shikaku who is smarter than Shikamaru. I think in the whole verse, only those two can outsmart him
