I think it's funny how people assume..
That when you enter Shikai your body gets an upgrade. xD Soul reapers are always at maximum speed, strength, and durability unless the Blade powers say other wise.

The anime sucks in explanations, but the manga doesn't.
It explained that there are four types of zanpuktous. Physicals, Kidou, Elemental, and Support.
