Rappers aren't talented? I'm pretty sure they are talented.
First off I doubt you could rap to save your life, especially about life experiences, which most rappers do. Second, rappers not only have to know how to construct beats, rhyme, flow, and lyrics they have to sell themselves, no one is going to like some lame rapper that plays DnD no matter how good he is. Besides, Wayne is alright not extraordinary, but alright. |

Most of mainstream artists advocate drugs, mistreating women, violence and much more. I don't really hear much life story stuff in mainstream aside from a few like Eminem. And no they do not need to know how to construct beats nor do most of them write their own material. The labels sound engineers and music producers do and they have lyricists on staff to write for them. That's the reality of mainstream hence my distaste for it. You are right though, they do sell themselves..they sell out their souls to make money whilst being nationwide icons who influence and encourage poor mindless behavior. If you want life stories, Grieves, Sadistik, Cage and much more do such rapping and it is far better than ANY mainstream I have ever heard in my entire life.

You kind of contradicted yourself, Eminem is the worst rapper in the case of mistreating women and such. In almost every song he has some reference to hitting a woman or making a lewd comment at them. Again stereotyping mainstream music, a few of the mainstream music people produce their own stuff (i.e. Kanye) You can't blame stupidity of people on a song or a rapper, people will do stupid stuff regardless of what someone says/does/sings about/or acts. And even then you couldn't solely blame it on rap considering there are movies out that encourage sex, drugs, and violence out all the time. How exactly do they sell their souls to make money? Obviously if they just wanted to make money many "mainstream" rappers could've stopped LONG ago, they're still making music for a reason. Sure you could argue "but they just want more money", though I'm pretty sure they would get more and more whether they made another album or not. Again I'll go back to the first paragraph, I'm pretty sure there are millions of people who haven't heard of them, that's because they aren't appeasing to the populous, which is what you need to do to be successful in any right of business or political matters. And there are in fact main stream rappers who do rap about real life experiences, the biggest example imo being Jay-Z who makes TONS of songs about his experiences. Sure there is drugs and the usual rap stuff that's in almost every song by any rapper, but that's because drugs played a huge roll in his life. All rappers aren't like Lil Wayne where they light a blunt in the beginning of every song and rap about how awesome they are because they can smoke weed and do whatever. Though it is working very well for him so far. |

And yes, Kanye does produce most of his beats. While his traits as a producer center around paying homage to other artists, any beats he sampled are completely different from the original package while adding in his own twist. A common example would be Graduation's Stronger. YouTube:

So yea. West one of the best rappers. Hell, one of the best artists in the world if y'all ask me.

Amazing as they might be in the studio, they are no different than the average individual. By rapping you mean sitting down for a year to write 12 songs and make an album? Yeah, I can rap too. By selling themselves you mean what? Buying a gold chain and wearing expensive clothes? How about being arrested or doing drugs? Lol Last edited by Isoteen; 11-18-2011 at 10:54 PM. |

Except for the fact that they managed to franchised their lives, tend to have incredible wordplay, memorizing voice authority, poetic traits, etc etc. By rapping he probably meant as getting you to sit down to listen to those twelve songs, which can compose for an hour or more, and hear nothing but said rappers talking about their lives, and still have some of it as club bangers. That's pretty special. Stereotypical for both. @Yori: Agreed. The sheer amount of production prowess he put behind All of the Lights was amazing IMO. Nearly fifty people working on one project. Six minutes of Elton John, Rihanna, Kid Cudi, Fergie, Elly Jackson of La Roux, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Charlie Wilson, Drake, Mike Dean, and himself being all squashed in together. To be honest, it sounded like an A-List of Artists Jerk-Off. Fortunately it wasn't. YouTube:

Club bangers would probably be attributed to the producers, and/or sound technicians.
As far as talking about their lives go, anyone can do that. |

Like I said, what is special is that you actually take the time and expenses to listen to what they're saying about their life. That isn't even rare; it's considered down-right impossible, especially in a post-modern society with already shrinking attention spans.

I'm quite sure nobody listens to a song to hear the half-decent rhymed lyrics.
The sound is the only thing that makes it worth anything. Are you honestly considering people buy Lil Wayne's albums because of his lyrics? It's the sound. |

I do. It's the same reason why people read a book, or sit around the campfire to tell midnight horror tales. Or why Shakespeare or Robert Frost was actually given a care in the world in the first place.
Actually yes. People in my school have been screaming how Lil Wayne's been at the top of his game, with his awesome lyrics and whatever. While I'm not saying that the production of the tracks aren't in the equation, lyrical prowess however also has some input in it. Although above all, the primary reason Wayne's so famous is because he's been riding a popularity coaster since '08 with Tha Carter III. If you happen to think so. Sound is good, but it's not the total package.

Difference being they do it about flashy diamonds, money, women, drugs, and massive egos. While rhyming, always.
While people like Shakespear wrote stories that lasted centuries, and Robert Frost's work, wow. For me it is, and a lot of other fans. Which is really why his recent album pretty much blew. Music is nothing more than sound. You can't produce, you ain't getting paid. |
