The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum. Much better than the movie and that's saying a lot because the movie was awesome. I'm definitely going to check out the sequels Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum and maybe even the non-Ludlum trilogy.

Recently been getting into Cormac MacCarthy's books. I've only read The Road and Blood Meridian so far. The Road is a must read for anyone who likes post-apocalyptic literature. Blood Meridian is difficult to describe, but just be warned it's one of the most graphic yet still thought-provoking books out there.

Finally, Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky. They made a video game based on his book, but it was only on 360 and I have a PS3, so I bought the book instead. Best decision ever! Glukhovsky builds tension and mystery better than anyone out there today and also paints perhaps the most desperate post-apocalyptic world ever. Too bad Glukhovsky is Russian and the sequel, Metro 2034, still hasn't been translated into English.

Wooster's Book Review Extravaganza

I have decided to grace this thread with a collection of bound materials I have perused over the pass two months or so (a few weeks before the Yule season 'til now). You're Welcome. :B

The King's Buccaneer-Raymond E. Feist
Spoiler:
This is the second book of the second series of Feist's never-ending Epic. In brief, the tale covers the adventure mainly of Nicholas the youngest son of Prince Arutha, whom played a large part in the last two books of the Rift Warseries. Essentially, Nicholas, his friend, a sea captain, a trickster (NOT a magician) and a few others are trying to save some girls and others captured in a sea raid. I must say this series is starting to grow on me. Maybe it is because the awesomeness that is Nakor and his endless bag of oranges, which by the way is the most awesome way an bottomless bad has ever been devised, or that I love sea voyages(see Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin series), but this set of books is better than the Rift War. Now only to find Shadow of a Dark Queen and continue my reading.

Takedown-Brad Thor
Spoiler:
As Thor's previous books, this one covers Scott Harvath, which I would describe as a cross between Keither Sutherland in 24 and Chuck Norris in Delta Force but in literary form. This story itself could be a season of 24 itself as it takes place essentially in one day. The synopsis for this story is a terrorist group trying to free one of their somewhere in New York by assaulting New York City as a distraction. The story is alright, I suppose. The best part is the introduction of the Troll, who is a tiny little man that hacks all kinds of information and has two giant Russian dogs, which brings us to..

The First Commandment-Brad Thor
Spoiler:
This story begins with the cliff hanger at the end of the previous entry. Some mysterious ne'er do well that has it in for Scott Harvath. The best part of this story is that the Troll and Harvath work together. It's pretty fun; I enjoyed this one more. Besides, this is the book before the Last Patriot, which apparently is like the Da Vinci Code for Muslims that resulted in a Fatah being placed on Brad Thor's head for writing it. How can that not be good? If it isn’t I will be sure to tell you.

The Last Wish-Andrzej Sapkowski
Spoiler:
This is a collection of some of the short stories about Geralt the Withcer!!!! I love these things, but I must say I am a fan of short stories and the Witcher. However, if you have played either of The Witcher games, and if you haven't go do so, you will find much in here to love. These little vignettes of the Geralt are amazingly well written (and translated) and the references will have you smiling ear to ear. It is also nice to finally see characters only mentioned in the games like Yennefer.

Blood of the Elves-Andezej Saplowski
Spoiler:
This is again a book about The Witcher universe; I'd be pressed to say this tale is actually about Geralt--not that he doesn't appear frequently. It is really about Ciri, a female child witcher that Geralt was promised (see the prior review). The best scene may be a snot-nosed kid telling Geralt his father’s sword is bigger. Heehee The alchemist in this story is nearly the same as one you meet in the first game as well--they are not the same character however. This tale also develops Yennefer, Dandellion, Shani, and a dwarven friend of Geralt, not Zoltan sadly. But the best character may well be Triss Merrigold. I think Geralt really dropped the ball taking Yennefer over her. This novel may be better than short story collection; however, I say that with a caveat. This Saga of Ciri is covered under five books. If you can read Polish go do so, but as of yet only the first is translated to English. I hear the second may be in print this year, but you are in for a long wait for the entire series. Furthermore, this novel is only a setup for the entire series, so don't look for too much action.

A Memory of Light-Robert Jordan /Brandon Sanderson
Spoiler:
Oh my what to say about this 900+ behemoth? "You have to read thirteen other massive tomes just to get to it," is what I say. And what a long slog it has been. I won't spoil the series for those that haven’t started, but the war to end all wars is what this book is from start to finish. Surprisingly, some of the war is given short shrift. The worst part is it is the most important part of the war, which is a shame because the rest is very well done. I think B.S. may just have gotten tired at the end of writing this murder weapon and forgot to write an extra two hundred pages. But let me give a general review of the entire Wheel of Time series. I would like to say go read The Eye of the World, the Great Hunt and the Dragon Reborn. The first is a great book and the other two are very good, but then you have the rest. They are filled with smoothing skirts, sniffing, never-ending, pointless characters and people doing nothing, sooo much nothing. I believe I hate every woman in this tale but one, and she isn’t in half the books. On that note, there is a pleasant surprise in A Memory of Light to those that despise a certain, obnoxious woman.
Only one more thing left to say. ASMODEAN I will remember you even if Jordan does not. ;~;

The Blade Itself-Joe Abercrombie
Spoiler:
This is the first book of the The First Law series, which follows below. It is somewhat similar to a GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire. It is a medieval-type setting given from multiple characters point of view. These characters include: Logen Ninefinger a barbarian of sorts than seems quite thoughtful but goes into spells of inhuman violence; Captain Jezal a ponce but decent swordsman; Glotka an inquisitor and similar to Tyrion in many ways; Bayaz a wizard. There are a couple of stories intertwined, but the barbarian in the North are fighting a kingdom and then there is another desert type empire in the south plotting as well. The point seemingly is that Bayaz wants to stop another wizard from using magic that makes a person strong through cannibalism by finding a key to release the magical powers of a demon realm, sorta. A little more complicated than that, but that is what it boils down to. This first book is the setup. All the characters meet up, the plot is set and all the majors are off to their destinations at the end whether it is North, South or across the ocean. But let’s get to the writing itself. Is it good? A qualified yes. It is written with modern day slang, but still seems to work. The major characters are some of the best developed I have seen; however, minor characters are often little more than one-dimensional props. But this is a great debut novel, but I nearly did not continue due to some of the flaws.

Before They Are Hanged and Last Arguments of Kings-Joe Abercrombie
Spoiler:
I don't want to spoil the series for those of you interested, so I will only provide a few comments on the latter two books. I think Before They are Hanged is the best of the three. There is a lot of intrigue, battles and actual character development, particularly for Jezal. I immensely enjoyed it. The third is the same, but then there is the end, which is supposed to be a major plot twist. It certainly is different, tis no happy ending that is for sure. But the major thrust of the twist I had already surmised by the middle of book two and the end is way too long and unfulfilling at the same time. The tedium is the opposite of a happy ending where you are inundated with all the joy of the characters. I think a quick slap would have been more sufficient. Without spoiling anything that is all I can say. For anyone that has read this series, I'd be glad to discuss this with you. Then all that is left undone, I imagine that Abercrombie did this to continue writing in this universe; there are three more books that are not part of this series. I may or may not read them, just so much more to read first.

The Dragon's Path-Daniel Abraham
Spoiler:
Another series similar to ASoIaF, but I prefer this one even if I have only read the first book. The setting is more historical with lots of plot mercantilism form of banking and such. Don't worry, this is not a course in Economics. Heehee Again the story is set from the perspective of a cast of characters Marcus, a mercenary and his companion; Cithrin a ward of a bank; Geder the son of a noble man; and Dawson a lord that doesn't like the way the Kingdom is changing. There are number of 'races' that make this not a pure historical fiction, but add a touch of fantasy. There are normal humans but also humanoids with various differences mostly with animal characteristics from insect to bat to elephant. The plot of this novel centers around minor war that affect all the characters directly, but also a strange religion that appears at the prologue and near the very end of this tale that sets up the next book. Anyway, I am looking forward to the next book. Abraham’s writing style is more to my taste than Abercrombie; although, I would probably suggest The First Law series over this to the forum at large.

The Dwarves- Markus Heitz
Spoiler:
Guess what? This is about Dwarves. Mmm, Dwarves. Mining, drinking, Scottish accents… Okay this time it's German accents, what you gonna do? I will give you a quick picture of this land: a square of land surrounded by mountains at all sides, rather large, five clans of dwarves living at intervals on the mountain range, and all the other races, humans, elves, magicians living inside. However, one of the clans was wiped out by orcs, trolls and nefarious means and their gates were crashed and those dratted orcs are now in the kingdoms of man. Oh and evil elf things that wiped out a lot of the elves. Haha stupid elves. The story itself is an orphaned dwarf named Turgril raised by a magician. He sets out on a quest, meets other dwarves and all hell breaks loose because of an evil a magician. How can the world be saved? A Hobbit and a ring? PSHAW Noo, good sir. By mining, forging a sword and sticking it in the backside of that lousy magician. Oh and mocking elves and their stupid trees as often as possible. Ahhh, good times. I love this book. Teehee

The War of Dwarves-Markus Heitz
Spoiler:
As it says just below the title: The eagerly awaited sequel to The Dwarves. Hell yes it is! After Turgril kicked some mage butt. He sets off to form his old clan with his new dwarven honey. Too bad everyone found out that he is from the evil dwarves, so her family disapproves. He should take advice from Farquar and moved onto some human maidens and become a swashbuckler. Mmmm. Anywho, there is some holy god in the West that is going to cause some . Damn Lawful Good So Turgril has to save the day again even though his babe married some other dwarf. But he is so awesome he forges some armor and does it anyway. All in a day’s work for a Dwarf. Oh and that bastard that stole his chick dies at the end, so it’s all good. Ale, ore and maidens for all! Woot!

The Looking Glass Wars-Frank Beddor
Spoiler:
This book is more of a young adult fare but an amusing one at that. Its premise is the Alice in Wonderland that we all know and love is false and the true tale is much more dreary. Instead Alyss Heart is a princess that fled to our realm when her evil Aunt killed the Queen, her mother, and took over the realm. All the characters are re-imagined in clever ways. Give it a read if you want a whimsical tale that is not quite as LSD induced as the original.

Dreamsongs: Volume I and II- George R.R. Martin
Spoiler:
This is a collection of short stories, novellas, novelettes(don't ask me what is the difference), screen plays and sundry written by Martin essentially before he started ASoIaF. These cover the gamut from science fiction, horror, fantasy to even a historical tale of Sveaborg. The best part is it is divided into nine sections each prefaced with a meaty preview of the tales to follow as well as just Martin's life at the time. The first section is actually stories her wrote as a child, good stuff. I have never read Martin's Sci-Fi material before and I really enjoyed seeing a different perspective on his writing style. It may be hard to believe but not everyone dies. Some of the best stories are here including A Song for Lya, The Ice Dragaon, Haviland Tuff and the first story of Dunk and Egg. If you are a fan of Martin, you might want to check this out. The only stories not included are his other full-length novel. Fevre Dream and the like.

If By Sea-George C. Daughan
Spoiler:
This is a historical novel. I was reading a little too much fiction even with my perusal of The Economist. This covers the creation of the American navy from the Revolutionary war to the end of the War of 1812. Rather than just concentrate on the ship building, naval battles and their captains, Daughin covers all the events of the time and places the navy in context. Reading about Napolean getting his arse handed to him in Moscow whilst American frigates were blowing British ships out of the water is good fun. The writing never gets bogged down in detail and the writing flows. This doesn't surpass my favorite book of all time, To Rule the Waves by Arthur Herman, but it is no slouch itself. I love naval history so I enjoyed it. But this should be a good read for those interested in American history as well. Give it a read, if you please.

That is all she wrote, so until next time dear hearts...

Default Re: The Book Review!

Whoops, I forgot a couple.

Mind & Cosmos: Why the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature is Almost Certainly False- Thomas Nagel

Quite a mouthful isn't it? The thrust of Nagel's argument, beyond the astronomically probability of life forming from base chemical compounds, is that reductionism does not explain intelligibility i.e. the reason the universe is knowable to our sense. Or conversely that our senses are a complete illusion. This isn't a trivial philosophical matter.
Spoiler:
Consider: to understand the universe you must assume that the universe is intelligible. But why is the universe intelligible? If limited to saying that universe is because it is, you have given a circular reason. Thus, Nagel states that there must be more to know.

Nagel then moves on to consciousness, which presents a even greater problem than intelligible. Why would natural selection create consciousnesses? The problem here is science does not even understand consciousness beyond knowing it is tied to brain function, but that is no greater understanding than say pressing 2+2= into a calculator gives 4 with no knowledge of the algorithms that are placed into a calculator. Nagel suggest perhaps that every particle has a bit of consciousness that when combined correctly give conscious creatures as well as other possibilities. In any case, Natural Selection completely fails to explain. Nagel them moves on to cognition and values. These present still greater problems over consciousness.

The values section also discusses the difference subjectivism (all morals laws/ truths are relative and are based on actual physical laws) versus realism (moral laws/truths are another set of laws onto themselves even if we do not completely understand them.) This is a sidetrack but interesting nonetheless for those that profess moral relativism with no basic understanding of the underlying assumptions they are making. Those assumptions are there nonetheless.

This is a short book, 128 pp, but there is a lot in these few pages. As Nagel is an atheist, the rejection of neo-Darwinism and subjectivism is quite fascinating. Read this if you like like independent thought. If you an evolution fundamentalist, you might want to pass.

The White Luck Warrior- R. Scott Bakker
Back to fiction, but the writer is at least a philosopher. I have reviewed all the previous entries, so look back to see what I have thought of the previous trilogy, The Prince of Nothing, and the first book of The Aspect-Emperor, The Judging Eye. In anycase, this may be my favorite book in one of my now favorite series. The White Luck Warrior is much longer than the previous entry, which I find a good thing. The story really gets going too. A few spoilers below.
Spoiler:

Assuming you are caught up with the other books, there is still the God-like Kelhus trying to bring an army of followers to defeat the No-God, but it is having a few problems against the hoards of beasts set against it and just keeping the entire army fed. Whether his Thousandfold Thought is prophetic or crazy is still unresolved.

Achamian is still on his quest to discover the truth of Kelhus with his former lover's, and now Kelhus consert, daughter and band of mercenaries along with a Nonhuman. Who pretty much makes the whole company drug addicts for a reason I will leave unsaid, But, they do find Sauglish right at the end. The White Luck Warrior is introduced and he is a doozy. He sees his entire life before him and just follows himself. The end of his life is killing Kelhus. The cult of the female goddess is plotting Kelhus downfall. There is quite a bit theological discussion explaining how hte gods could be against each other's designs. So far The Warrior is unstoppable as he continues his journey.

The most disturbing part of the tale is Esmenet, her sons, and Kelhus half brother. Lots of politics here and the craziness of Kelhus' sons. The crazies may be the youngest because he can hide it the best.

As I said in the previosu reviews, I have a love/hate relationship with the first trilogy, but the second has yet to disappoint. Mainly because there is no set path. All the characters may fail, and that makes good story telling. I haven't even mentioned Sorweel the King of the Sakarpus. That is good stuff if only because of his doubts, which he is allowed to have even being near Kelhus. A refereshign change and his connection to the goddess. I look forward to how his character develops even if the end of the book is...ugh. >_>
Anyway, I am still enjoying and I plan to read as the books are written.

Edit: Forgot to mention that they changed the art style on this book, so not it doesn't match with others. No happy Wooster about that. :[

Odd Thomas. (I'm about to make another thread with greater detail, feel free to link to that along with the post if you feel like it)

It's probably the best series I have ever read ever. Dramatic, suspenseful, comedic, and... just great. I can't put one of the books down once I pick it up.

Divergent and Insurgent

Sort of similar to The Hunger Games, but not really focused on a "death game" as entertainment for the ruling government. It is set in the future(we have no idea how far) Chicago. The city is blocked off from the outside world, lake Michigan is now a swamp, and the people have divided into 5 factions that each have their own beliefs and ideals about how to maintain peace. I'll give them both 9/10. I definitely reccomend you check them out.

Book: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
Author: Jesse Andrews

Okay first of all just cuz it has "Dying Girl" on it's title doesn't mean this is a tragic book...It's completely opposite! My cousin gave me this book and I recently finished reading it and it's freaken hilarious! xDD

Greg Gaines is an ordinary and overweight guy who has worked hard to be a totally neutral, sort-of friend to all and enemy to none throughout his entire high school career. As he goes into his senior year, he fully hopes to make it through as easily as possible in just the same way he has been doing it for the last 3 years. This is changed when his mother tells him that Rachel, a girl he was friends with for a week or so in middle school, has been diagnosed with leukemia. Greg was forced by his mom to rekindle his friendship with her so in that way she'll be happy and feel better,Greg does what his mother wants him to do, because that is the only way to get her off his back. He visits Rachel a few awkward times and discovers that he is good at making her laugh. Then, he visits her and brings along his only close friend/coworker, Earl.
Earl lets Rachel in on a secret: He and Greg are filmmakers (Really bad ones). Since Rachel is sick, they agree to let her see the films that only they have seen (They don't like to show their movies to others cuz the movies are all childish and crappy). As Greg and Earl spend more time with Rachel, the dynamic becomes interesting and the story gets hilariously awkward but awesome.

This book made me laugh out loud countless times. The main character, Greg, is also the narrator and he's awesomely and awkwardly hilarious. He always tells the truth to his reader in a funny way. I really recommend this book cuz it's really good and it'll surely crack you up like it did to me xDDD

My favorite series is Warriors by Erin Hunter. I love those books. Need a quick read? Pick up Into the Wild.

Book: Light
Author: Michael Grant

It's the last book in the Gone series, so I won't say anything about it and give anything away, but if you like well written stories, easily relate-able characters, and tear jerking scenes (both sad and happy tears) that pop out at you as you fly down the tracks on an emotional roller coaster, then I totally recommend this book, and the entire series, to anyone. And even if you don't like those things, I still recommend it. These books are good for everyone. Except maybe children.

Delirium series.

Another Dystopian society series set in a future where they basically lobotomize you at age 18 so you become a semi-sociopath not able to love anyone or anything. I really enjoyed the 3 books and the extra short stories. If you like hunger games type stuff then give this series a shot. 8/10

Also read a book by the same author called Before I Fall. A popular girl in high school dies in a car crash, but then wakes up and repeats the same day over and over. She has to figure out why this is happening to her and what she has to change. 9/10

I like this topic. Figure I'll go straight to my favorite series.

The Kingkiller Chronicles: The Name of the Wind/Wise Man's Fear

Spoiler:
Just look up the praise for Patrick Rothfuss if you don't believe me. This man is arguably the best fantasy writer out there today, and yes, I will argue that. This story of a child, who became a legend, to only become a shell of his old power. The only ability he has left of his time as Kvothe is the ability to recite the story of his life, and what a story it is.

Rothfuss has a way with words that makes me literally swoon. I don't like spoiling stories, but I will say his writing is so good that there was a simple scene of Kvothe playing a lute around a campfire that nearly brought me to tears, just by explaining how Kvothe felt when he spilled his emotions out into his music.

You watch him grow from a talented child with a knack for learning, with loving parents and a happy life, to an orphan on the streets of a grimy city where every night is a fight for survival, to one of the most skilled, powerful men alive. It's not a children's book. There are times when he's in danger of having more than just his coin stolen, if you know what I mean, and hell, at one point he meets a Fae Woman of legend who kills men through peer lust alone - But Kvothe survives.

It's a world of magic, an interesting and original form that relies more on science and brains as opposed to flashy lights and wands. His time at the University reminds me in many ways of Hogwarts, only more adult and unforgettable characters, especially the Masters.

The entire story is a journey of enlightenment, as Kvothe attempts to unravel the mystery of his murdered parents, killed by creatures dismissed as less than a myth, but he knows they exist... He's the only person alive who has seen him. But how do you find men that nobody believes really exists? Especially when that group will go to any means in order to cover up their existence.

Settings of the story include a sprawling city, a king's court, the realm of the Fae, and more than a few taverns.

Kvothe is a virtuoso musician, a romantic, an arcanist, a fierce warrior, a skilled tactician, blessed with a silver tongue and wit that isn't even close to comparable, yet at the end of the day, he's still a vulnerable teenage boy trying to find his way in the world.

When George R.R. Martin reads your book in one sitting, because he finds it utterly captivating and impossible to put down, you know you've wrote a masterpiece. And that's what this is.

One more book remains of the trilogy, and I'm so eager for it that I check the author's blog daily.
If you read this series, I swear to you, you will NOT regret it. Ask Wooster.

Should be noted the end of the trilogy but the story is a set of three trilogies
