Jiraiya stronger than Orochimaru?

So I'm rewatching Naruto.. from the original series. Orochimaru clearly stated that he was weaker than Itachi. However when Kisame and Itachi were pursuing Naruto, Itachi claimed that in the best case scenario they would both have to die just to take his life.

I always thought as Orochimaru as not the strongest, but the deadliest. Him and Sasori were called the deadly duo.

Eh I see this get pointed to all the time. I kinda agree with Prince here. Also, back in part 1 Itachi's stamina kinda sucked just like Kakashi's. Itachi was so tired after using Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu he couldn't use his sharingan anymore. If that kinda thing happened in battle he'd be screwed. Jiraiya also has the all hax Frog Song which essentially can't be countered so if he managed to get that off they might really have died. Basically, it was too big of a risk. Even if they are stronger there is still the chance of them losing.

Also, if you look at Orochimaru's attacks they really aren't meant for an all out brawl like Jiraiya's. Of course we never got to see all the jutsu he amassed over the years but I still don't think they would all have A rank and S rank destructive capabilities. I agree with your statement that Orochimaru is the deadliest of the Sannin and probably the overall better shinobi but Jiraiya was strongest.

I take the same stance with Hiruzen vs the Third Raikage. Since Kabuto, Iruka, and Oro said Hiruzen was the best of his generation and that he'd mastered all forms of shinobi tactics but we've clearly seen that the Third Raikage is a battle god.

Hmm I never considered Itachi getting stronger over the time skip. I hardly doubt Jiraiya did, however even against Pain he had a good chance of winning if only he wasn't so confused. Also I noticed that Hiruzen was mentioned to be the strongest Hokage which seems odd now after watching Shippuden.

Also random, but Hiruko, Kakuzu, Deidara and Pain had the same voice actors in episode 135 I guess it stopped being so sketchy during the Sasuke retrieval arc. Just Deidara's outline looked a little off.. I'm not sure if they were all meant to be monsters at that time since everyone looked pretty human apart from Deidara and Kakuzu's old partner.

Oro is way stronger. Especially if both get prep. Oro can use ET and jiryria would have SM. jiryria would not be able to defeat ET.

The only good thing jiryria has in base is SOTU

Plus oro's arms were sealed most of his screen time so we have not seen him to all out

I say Orochimaru. Jiraiya's SM is too complicated, takes to much prep.
Oro showed more feats, but Jiraiya's summon is better.

More skilled =/= Stronger

Unlike Oro, Jiraiya can prep his greatest skill in battle. Also I don't see how Jiraiya if given the amount of prep time Oro needs to use ET, wouldn't be able to defeat it. By the time Oro has all the prep he needs for ET Jiraiya could've taken a nap, written a book, summoned Shima and Fukusaku, eaten some ramen while they gathered chakra. And as soon as the fight starts Frog Song GG.

After that Jiraiya just strolls over and seals the Edos then uses Ultra Big Ball Rasengan to erase Oro.

Yeah I agree with Vivi ^ they all seem equal to each other but are better at different aspects of Jutsu.
Oro has his knowledge and forbidden Jutsu, Jiraiya has his sage mode and summons and Tsunade has her strength and healing.
But PoP brought up a good point about Oro not having his arms for most of Naruto, and besides I've always had favouritism for Jiraiya

He demonstrated a pretty good knowledge of fuinjutsu (sealed Amaterasu, released Naruto from Oro's elephant seal, was entrusted with the key to Naruto's Kyuubi seal). I figure if you give him some time he'll be able to figure out something, I mean Jiraiya's traveled the world and amassed 40+ years of experience I think he can accomplish something some sand chuunin have figured out.

One thing is very clear concerning Jiraiya and Itachi.

Kishimoto has continuously hyped Itachi up to the point of a possible Gary Stu (still has his failure) and compared to Nagato while Jiraiya long time ago and now is left behind.

If it weren't for his sage mode he wouldn't be even noticed as much.

Originally ITachi was compared to Jiraiya now he is compared to Nagato and Pain. Jiraiya has been left behind largely.
