Zetsu is too weak. If this were true than white zetsu would solo. Cuz black zetsu was not invented yet

sorry...this theory doesn't work... Hashirama can sense anything with his chakra... if zetsu can hide his presence from others, he can't do that with hashi... see how hashi sensed his own cells within Oro almost instantly...

I don't see the Zetsu having anything to do with his death. They were fodder in the war. so im not sure how they would have been strong enough to kill Hashirama

I am betting that after Hashirama won against Madara He delivered a lethal blow and gave gave his cells to try and revive his friend but it still appears he is dead. When in truth it did save him but it took time for it to effect him but he body had already broken down a good amount causing Madara to take to the shadows and create Zetsu, from the same cells that saved him. During which the awakening of Rinnegan, allowing him to survive to see his apprentice brought up. So Hashirama probly slowly died from the amont of his cells he managed to transfer and or lived out his life but with a with a severe wound that sped up the process. Which allowed Tobirama to watch his brother die fueling his hatred for Uchiha's. Explained how Madara survived how he was inducted to Senju cells, Why hehad a Face of Hashirama on his belly probably where the wound was.
And the awakening of Rinnegan by accident because he did say it just happened.
