its not that they wouldn't pass through it in their travels, if it was destroyed the way it was portrayed it could very well be considered a grave yard, a place people don't go to unless they are paying their respects (I think images of it burning were shown).

It could also be that the rumors of what happened were put out there so that the Uzumaki clan could go into hiding, and perhaps that is where the rest of the Senju are as well (who pretty much vanished).

I think the big question isn't where but what? what is it that Sasuke is looking for?
First of all I'm sure they're in Konoha but whatever he's looking for I'm willing to bet is Senju/Uchiha related, I'm willing to bet it's something to do with either Senju relatives or Shisui Uchiha, I don't know why though.. it's just a guess

perhaps a once destroyed village like the original uzuamaki village or the original location of the uchiha clan before they merged with the senju to form the leaf
