Everyone can nominate a user for Member of the Month, then afterwards they all enter a public voting stage where everyone votes for who they think should win.

Afterwards the top 3 move onto a Private voting that allows the members of the council to vote again. The winner of that vote is then chosen as the winner.

Why do people seem so desperate to win? I have no idea

Oh and on a side note I just found out the cofounder of dragoncon(a local convention in my area) had been arrested for child molestation charges awhile back (it was just a quick update on the local news a few minutes ago) I had no idea about it till now but I'm damn glad he's behind bars already but it would've been better if his crimes could've been prevented in the first place

If the crimes can be prevented then you can also prevent the creation of some of the future molesters because its not uncommon for the victims to become the monsters that wronged them in the first place

On average, the MotM council is a respectful organization that is meant to vote for people that deserve the votes. Prior to Wishful, the voting habits of the members were little more than silent button pushing, so I can't really argue for or against that acts of other members voting habits. However, I do know that a few of the people who voted were debating within themselves on the deservingness of one nominee vs. the other, and went with Luna. I, myself, gave a dual vote because I know that Luna, as minimalist as her posting habits portrayed, was an active part of the staff behind the scenes, whether that be by banning bots or whatever. And she was definitely more active within the Chats section (which, contest to belief, is a good reason to nominate someone due to their spurring activity).

Member perception is one thing that people must be aware of, but they must also be aware that members may perceive things differently than they may appear. And despite how people view government, the fact that they have voted in delegates means that they won't necessarily know what goes on behind the scenes, which is all the more reason to understand that perception isn't always right. At the same time though, I understand that overriding popular rumor is a very difficult task and often more energy than should be spent, considering that the odds of beating it are slim to none.

Everything has flaws, but conceiving a plan to have the fewest number is what matters. We had hoped that giving a portion of voting to the public (as bias as that is in itself, considering that a lot of people in themselves vote for who they like most) would drop the rumors a bit, but people will always find a reason to complain.

we wont be in the golden age ever- being in the golden age requires that we as a forum compete with the major sites out there, sites like CBR, or NF, or Gamefaqs or hell even Movie codec AV and CV

all of these forums have hundreds of thousands of members a far less PG atmosphere zero censorship on profanity..and a very pro internet piracy stance (well no CBR and GF seem to lack this) the average user on those major forums also tends to be kind of "an " by the average Viz debaters standards

so there maybe a conscience decision to never reach those levels

incidentally I think spacebattles and Stardestroyer.net just turned 20 - how those two forums survived this long is beyond

especially SdN where flaming is okay as long as you have a valid point..and repporting "legal" flaming gets you temp banned and a user title with the words "cry baby" in it

those sites are relics..of a crazier age I guess

I was more looking at the "golden age" as reaching a point in time when our staff was, at least more so than not, unbias. Trying to beat numbers of members on a forum that is hindered by copyright laws and the FCC rules. Although they're not breathing down our necks, a large corporation that brings anime/manga to the US is running this site, so you can't help but guess that lawsuits are a possibility.

Despite all the rules that this site holds, it may end up being a good thing, seeing as our users are on average more respectful and mature than those on other sites. No, I'm not saying that other sites down have their own model users, but with a large, no holds barred site, you have more odds of getting assholes than not, since they won't be held back by rules.

can I ask you a question? What's the debate section like now? I remember it being almost as hostile as the BG's about a year or two back then it sorta just relaxed

I guess its because Gamabunta was the sec mod and CoP was a regular there and both had..rather, ermm charming personalities is the polite word for it?

I don't frequent the section often, to be perfectly honest, but I see it similar to this section in the sense that users are just users. There is and always will be the overlying possibility of flaming and user-to-user issues, but that's the same for all sections, which is more of a reason why the BGs aren't this "special case" I've heard so many times before.

that was directed more towards TBC and myself as Shika and US are usually the good cops. For TBC it's likely because he was a veteran debater from the larger forums and was primarily a dbz debater..the bigger sites are incredibly hostile whether its profane flaming like MVC does, or creative insults like NF and SB does, or just blanket very brutal non insulting attacking the way they do it on the comic book sites..it's also very intense in the DBZ fandom where they tend to be abnormally hostyile

TBC likely held those ways close to home and debated in a very watered down but still aggressive form.

it's not uncommon for a moderator especially a high ranking one or a veteran one to be incredibly verbally abusive towards forum trolls or fanboys..in the larger forums I recall on one site I was on our boss Watcher had an official seal of fail "You are now, hence forth and forever wrong on all assertions you have made in this thread, further more you lack the mental ability to make coherent and objective views on this topic, there fore you are forever banned from debating your favorite series failure to adhere to my ban will result in my deleting your account and permanently IP banning you" or something

and yeah I was on the receiving end more than a few of those speeches when I was a newb, they pissed me off as much as I imagine PoP may get some times.

it made sense in that context for TBC to do that, ask any poster who debates here but regs on a site like NF or SB about how if you are caught out of line you're going to get ripped apart and if not by the staff by the memberbase while the staff temporarily allows some slack- it's a tough love policy

a lot of the early BG staffers, myself and Shika as well came from that type of environment TBC and a lot of his people and us as well have tried to adopt a watered down less abusive version of this

for my part I've always as a member and a moderator tried to channel my wrath so to speak to people who deserve it- to stay within the confines of the rules of this site- and I think that's my speeches are seen as something of a crowning moment of awesome as opposed to mindless flaming

I'm not defending it I know that none of us have carte blanch on anything and thus special treatment is idiotic- I do things a certain way that's different but I' make damn sure to stay within the rules otherwise you're no better than the dregs you police basically.

I understand perfectly that other sites are homes to trolls and vicious users, but that is not this site. Yes, we will always and forever have incoming trolls and whatnot that should be dealt with swiftly and acceptably, but I'd hope for a more passive method than aggressive. The users themselves are, in essence, moderators as their actions are models for others users to take after. For the few that decided not to tone it down, there are warning and bannings to help police better.

I understand that moderators are people too, but I believe that all members of staff should be role models and be capable of controlling themselves to act more classy in situations that could normally get the better of others. I don't agree with a mod using his position as a reason to be an to others. I believe that people are originally good, so I try to get others to user that good against others to overall make the community a better place. You can passively deal with a troll just as well as you can aggressively, without pissing off the other party.

I've never seen you mod before but from what I have seen of you just interacting with you I doubt that's an inaccurate character assessment

I know I use my opinion a lot within the staff area and just around the forum in general, but I use it when the situation calls for it. I act professional when I need to act professional, which is why I wasn't swearing at TRS the entire time I was trying to portray my point.

This is the only place where we're going to disagree I wasn't being a douche to Eagles because I enjoyed screwing with him I was being that way because he's a pedophile

a person like that should be abused, mistreated and bullied every second of his life should be made a living hell online and in real life

I consider it a civic obligation and a moral duty to do that, and if I was his neighbor I'd make his personal life impossible I'd out him to the community and turn the entire neighborhood into one frenzied lynch mob against him because he is a dangerous, unstable and depraved predator and he doesn't belong in any community.

I'm also an adult in charge of minors in the sense that as a mod I've got to think of the safety of the debaters I have that are underage- I think in that case I'm obligated to do everything in my power to keep him as far away from kids as possible- I think that's something we can both agree on yes?

I wasn't trying to accuse you of picking on Eagle out of amusement and I am in no way defending his rumored actions. Purely and wholeheartedly the only thing I was and will always be against is HOW the actions were taken. Yes, you can feel free to take whatever actions you see fit in private, whether that be in PM or off the forum as a whole, but I don't believe in acting so primal in plain sight of other users. It does not exude the ideal that a moderator should.

Daph pisses and moans all the time in the staff area about SNB or alleged SNB, but she never goes out of her way to troll whoever she believes is his new alt in public. That is probably the most respectful part about the whole SNB ordeal, that she keeps her opinions and dealings away from immature activities such as bullying another user into submission.

You could have easily taken the route of reporting the issue, PMing a higher up, or, I guess, even go as far as to thread ban him from anywhere he posts just to keep the possibility of him taking these actions to the feared level.

Again, I'm not against keeping Eagle off the site and I'm not against what you did, I'm just against where and how these actions were taken. Those improper actions of a moderator are something I won't tolerate, as I see those actions as more proof to our staff having yet to reach a better position.

Whitebeard is awesome, people keep putting him in fights he's destined to get slaughtered in though which makes me kinda sad- I understand doing it to a guy like Sasuke or those hypocrites in the world government..but Newgates too awesome

He's a beast, but do you think that people could possibly be putting him in stomp threads to further test his capabilities? This is the man that reacts to a man of light and splits islands in half, so why not keep pushing him a little further?

As I said above, I don't condone any of Eagles rumored actions. I say rumored because I, personally, can't prove that any of these actions were taken. I just disagree with how the situations was handled and hope to prevent it further.
