RIP Playstation 2: 2000-2013

Just found this article over at Kotaku:

"Having sold over 150 million units since its release in 2000, the PlayStation 2 has today ceased shipping to Japanese retailers, meaning once remaining stock is gone, it's gone."

Naturally, I'm always late to the party! heh I have over 50 PS2 games, yet don't own a console! That'll soon be rectified though TBH, I've always been a SEGA girl at heart, so a part of me is glad to hear this news..!

Still, 13 years is a pretty damn good run - trust the Japanese to get the absolute max out of old technology. Kudos. <3

Any thoughts?

Sony PS2 and even 3 has been pretty great! I still have my PS2 sitting around with controllers and games! I fear for the PS4 though, Sony seams set on digging its own grave, jumping in and telling the city to fill it with cement.

Why what is wrong with the PS4?

its not the system itself, its what they are adding to all the discs...they will be putting in small smart chips that pretty much lock store bought game discs to a particular machine...essentially if you ever bought used games, or used gamefly or borrowed a game from a friend...You won't be able to anymore! it will now be required that you purchase the game brand spanking, and will have no secondary market value what so ever :-/

Yeah I heard about this, it sucks.
Even though i'm an XBOX kinda girl soooo
I also heard that the PS4 you will HAVE to have internet on it to play games, but i'm not sure if that's true or not.

Its cool, we Xbox folks have our own issues potentially...MS had talked about something similar but with the backlash, they retracted what they said. These companies are pretty much at war with the secondary market because they keep releasing crappy products that simply aren't worth keeping, so when they hit the secondary market those people make no cash and the price of the game drops to closer of what its actually worth!

Personally, I like the secondary market because I can try a game to see if I like it! If I do and its really worth the value, I will buy a copy new to support the dev's...EA & Activision are poison to the game industry though, they can't be profitable, and everything they touch turns to crap (they ruined ME for me)....

Well this is already implemented in Diablo 3, so it wouldn't shock me if they made an internet connection required.

Not yet, they haven't confirmed that will be the case! And really, if they DID do that, if they did a price drop on games, making them $40 instead of $60 since they wouldn't have to compete with the secondary market, I may be ok...I just doubt they will! Sony has done so many questionable things, I honestly wonder if they even KNOW their customers!?! its like...ya...Though its a big company and they do make good PC's and TV's! they just gotta pull it together in the gaming division!

Ps2 is half of my childhood right there.

Had beastly Games , didnt break easily and also was a dvd player. /Nostalgia

i still have mine laying around somewhere and i still have most of the games for it.

Regarding ps4 idk but it seems to early for it i mean i know ps3 has been running since 06 but still there is much that can be done with the current ps3.

I dont see why internet would be required for all games.

Games are way too expensive for their lack of quality sure ill gladly throw my 60 euros at you for content packed games like skyrim , or epics like god of war etc, large and beutifull games actually worth their value.

But for crap like battleships i dont even want to pay 1 euro yet its still 56 euros in stores.

That's not good for Sony to be getting rid of a really popular console, but many corporations do that on purpose to drive sales onto crap consoles and crap games xD

I have to agree Sajuuk, I think the amount of support they put into the PS2 after the PS3 launched, really hurt their PS3 sales...If you notice MS kind of dumped support for the original Xbox after only a month of the 360's release! they focused their resources on the new machine and left the old in the dust...its actually pretty incredible that the PS2 has been made for so long!

I got to say I have a ps3 and I think I would have enjoyed a X-box better. Ps3 was almost double the price of x-box when it came out (500 or something to x-box's 300, now less than 200) also heard x-box got better online servers and my ps3 freezes quite often. Only thing PS3 had was internet but x-box has that now.

I think I gots me one of the first ones, if I pop off this thing on the front it has a code that starts with PT or sommin' like that and the manz at GameXchange said he can't take it 'cos it is too old and one of the first models. Curse me for even trying to sell it.
