Who habeus corpus applies to has always wobbled around. Of course, Lincoln suspended it for citizens, which obviously, it must at least apply. However, combatants in time of war should not have it applied to them.

Anywho, the South saw the growth of anti-slavery writing on the wall and tried to extend it for there own selfish reason. Not that it would really matter as England smashed slave trade worl-wide. SO it's there fault and Lincoln fixed their stupidity. If you go to war you have to win. Lincoln's fault was running a poorly run war at the beginning. Once Sherman and Grant got the reins of it and real war was fought; victory was swift. Plausibly he is the greatest president, but I think in a hundred years the mantle will pass to Reagan and FDR jointly; they are already hovering back and forth around second among the US polls. In the end, the Civil War was an internal disturbance, in the history of the world WW II and the Cold War matter much more. Both those presidents ended those wars, Lincoln did nothing for world-wide slavery, that was Britain.

pretty much agreed here and while I think it does involve war crimes I support total war as a valid method of conducting warfare but I wanted to lay it out there. Some of what Sherman did was by the times standards and today pretty horrible

Reagen and FDR are pretty good picks for greatest American presidents in history

but if I were a historian judging it a century from now I'd also look at Ike and JFK Ike was the great builder he more or less modernized the US the highway system and all that I don't think the US could have become a hyperpower without that.

and JFK brought man into the final frontier whatever becomes of us over the next thousand years it will be because of him
