Anything we can do about old accounts?

I am aware we all discussed this a bit and have a few old threads on it. But we have so many dead accounts and with new users coming along some might like though accounts. Plus no more abnoux user names xxXNARuto7837!!Xxx like so

I know it will take some work, but I am not a techy guy so I don't know how much back end work it will really be, but it will be cool if we can do it.

I remember that after a year of no activity (or something along though lines), that the account gets deleted or so. I have no clue if this is even in place or was in place, hell might even just of had been a thought.

According to something I read somewhere, your not supposed to delete an account without the request of the user. People have easily registered, forgotten about the site and only remembered it existed when they got an email sent out. It's best just to leave the accounts because the owner might as well come back, become active and end up on staff.

Also, an inactive account takes up absolutely no space whatsoever on a database. Larger forums like PokeCommunity don't delete accounts because they don't do anything whatsoever to the forum and there's an infinite (*cough* not really *cough*) amount of space available for the server. A profile takes about 10kb of space on a database.

That's just my thoughts but the tl;dr of that is: there isn't really anything wrong with letting them collect dust

True enough and all, but some accounts (like Minato and such) are never going to be used (yes I know) and some of the stupid accounts like "!! AAAAbbbb" are of no use and just look stupid.

Agreeing with KK.

A couple of our mods have had accounts and forgotten about them, just to realize that they've actually already made an account. I know that Jonesy and Box (mods now) had forgotten accounts and are now assets to the forum.

Not to mention it looks good to have X amount of members anyway.

I'm in line with all the thinking here, though freeing up prime usernames becomes iffier to scale when we branch out into a more diverse Viz site. It's one thing for people to want the cast of Naruto as names, it's another to have that happen with every anime/manga name across all of our franchises, let alone that of others. That's a job I don't want to touch .

Maybe it would be good if you could do it to some popular names on request if there account has been inactive for an extended period of time.

But it would probably be too much of a waste of time.

^ I doubt it takes much time to check an existing accounts last time of activity to judge if its old enough to be deleted.

Even a normal user could do that by going into the member list and looking for the user with the username you wanted.

Like for example, I wanted my username to be Cloud Strife.......but its already taken here.

http://naruto.viz.com/forum/member.php?u=33478 That account has been inactive for more then a year now * Still not long enough to warrant it to be deleted imo* but in about a year or 2 it should be if someone wanted that username in particular.

Its not a big deal if its some weird username that no one will ever think of but for mainstream characters it might as well be deleted if someone more active will use the name instead.

Of course this should all be done on request and not just because the account is over 2 years old because no harm is done in leaving it on the forum anyhow.

^ Make another one, Lots of sites delete old unused accounts. A message could be sent to accounts every 6 months warning them of the potential deletion of there account.

Yeah I guess it's feasible.

I can't believe this name wasn't taken, so I got mine already haha..

But if it's a simple process for deleting old accounts and renaming active ones I guess it would be a nice thing to do.

You might want to add a VACATION MODE that lasts for X days (you choose the number), so if one would be away, he'd enter vacation mode specifying where he will be, then when he comes a day within the X days he can remove the vacation mode. If he goes off the limits, he'll be accounted as an inactive member and he will have a GRAY username, or any other color.

If he comes back after passing the X days, he can simply contact an admin and claim that he's back again.
