I clearly hope this to be the turning point of the fight, cause Tobito gets pushed to the Good Side by this seemingly "stupid" death.
So, from this POV, Neji achieved even more than what Hinata had achieved during the Pain fight, though of the VERY similar idea (affecting BOTH Naruto and the bad guy's attitude).
Hinata only saved Naruto, Kakashi and Shizune - Neji saved the whole world!

Kishi needed a character to die for plot reasons and Neji
drew the short straw. Neji is a victim of formula one writing.

Really just about any other character would have been virtually
as effective. Only reason anyone gives a darn about Neji's death
is because of Part 1 when Neji actually mattered. But in Part 2
Neji was put on hold until Kishi needed some formula one writing.

Now yes we did have Neji and Hinata fighting side by side
in the war but c'mon we got like what one or two measly
panels of that. Compare it to Choji vs Asuma where we
actually got some genuine character building...
Even if it was done through a recycled fight.

Neji should have died at the Kidomaru fight.

It would have made the story a million times more interesting.

Neji's death at the Kidomaru fight was much more profound. He was going to die and he knew it. But because he was a genius, Neji came up with a brilliant idea on how to deafeat his enemy. Sadly, it required a killing blow, but such is life. he continued to fight to bring the enemy down.

Why did Neji sacrifice himself for Naruto? Because he is a genius. What?!

Kishi has been doin this to Neji for some time...remember when Inoichi relayed a messAGE to the entire alliance to go support naruto, all the k-11 said something, in their heart to naruto except neji,. lol. kishi scapegoated him

Well they are the main characters so of
course they will get most of the focus.

There's plenty of good stories where the focus is on a select few.

Kishi's REAL problem is that he has characters live past their expiration date. He starts them off with the potential for an interesting story but then puts them on the back burner for the real story. Then they become a foot note.

Disagree. I think he just needed to find a way to write them out of
the story whether that be killing them off or putting them on a bus.

Well balancing a lot of characters in a story is by no means a simple task.
Especially when a lot probably just exist for the sake of world building.

Though the lack of Anbu in the story is a huge shame.

Well, Neji might have been Ideal for a first death of the team members..at this battle.

1. powerful
2. Not developed, so no loss of story line
3. Was a big stepping stone for Naruto's development.

When someone halfway powerful, and with a back story, up and dies, the author is telling you...

"Things are about to get serious."

A more important character will naturally die next. upping the stakes from one death to the next.
