To me it's hard to say who the best rapper ever is due to the fact that hip-hop has changed so much over the years. Each decade has brought something new to the table. I mean for us in the 90's, there was no one better than Pac or B.I.G., where as Pac told better stories compared to B.I.G. who had an overall better flow. Then you also have Big L who was a combination of both and would've been top three if not for his unfortunate death. To me DMX was one of the top guys back then too. Then you have older guys like Rakim, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane etc. As of today you have Lupe Fiasco along with guys like NAS Immortal Technique, Common, Talib Kweli who have also been doing it for years. Eminem has definitely proven himself to be top 10 for sure. The point is that I don't know if you can do a best rapper ever cause of how the game has changed. I'll tell you now though Lil Wayne and Drake are not in the discussion. Drake has taken a page out of Ja Rule's book and sings. Lil Wayne is just that and we leave it at that.

Ha ha, according to Drake, he's the "first person to have ever rapped and sang."
Of course, after there was a spill out on Twitter, he revised his statement to having been the "first person to have ever successfully rapped and sang."

Wow, I didn't know he said that. Guess he was too busy still playing Jimmy on Degrassi to notice Ja Rule did it for quite a few years with Murder Inc before 50 Cent shut him down hard. Cuz I would say Ja was very successful too, he was everywhere singing hooks lol.

Ja Rule, Phonte, Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Mos Def, Frank Ocean, Andre 3000, Pharell Williams, Slick Rick, Kanye West, HELL, EVEN BIZ MARKIE did it not only BEFORE him, but also BETTER than him. Heck, some can even make the case that some of Drake's labelmates do it better than him. Who am I referring to exactly? The Weeknd. There was also an interview of him complaining to Jay and Kanye for copying 'his and Lil Wayne's idea' of doing a collaboration album together. You know, even though this was long after Watch The Throne had been announced. And long, long after hip-hop duos like Clipse and OUTKAST.

I have to wonder if he actually means what he is saying or is this just for exposure. I mean this is just such an ignorant statement. I mean all the people you listed did it way better. I wouldn't know about The Weeknd, I can say I don't give anyone on that label a shot. Speaking of that label, can we all agree that Nicki Minaj is not hip-hop in the traditional sense or in any sense now that I think about it. When I think of all the female rappers who actually have a flow and style that came before her it is upsetting she considers herself in that league.

Drake is one of the best in the game right now, and most of those you named aren't even in the game anymore.
The only person on your list Vat that is or was better than Drake, regardless of the point in their career, is Kanye, and he never did the whole combination of singing and rapping. He did one album, 808's and Heartbreak, where he sung and it was auto-tuned. Last edited by Yellow Flash; 10-14-2012 at 04:46 PM. |

Nicki Minaj? I would consider her as bubblegum hip-hop. The same as Cee-Lo Green, Flo Rida, or that one Spanish dude who's name I keep forgetting. So in other words, yes, not really hip-hop or rap. She can surprise you from time to time though, I'll admit (Ex. Monster). Specifically speaking, the Weeknd isn't exactly a labelmate of Drake's, seeing as that he isn't signed to YMCMB. I would say that he's more of a inside guy who's in Drake's camp. If

LOOB, are you trying to accuse Kanye of biting Drake? Then feel free to give me a song where Drake sung BEFORE 808s & Heartbreak. Because I've sure as hell can't see one. Nope, this is a notion found on both subjective and objective perspectives.

808's wasn't a mix of the two... Everyone is subject to their own opinion, but that is a very biased point of view. |

... Did you even read the examples that I've given to you Flashykins?
Try Urban Dictionary. What I mean is that if it weren't for 808s, then Drake wouldn't even exist. At least the Drake that we all know, and may not necessarily love. Like I said, objectively and subjectively. Unless you're willing to present some facts that Drake is somehow superior to Lauryn musically.

Yes and none of them are or were any good.
Too lazy. Of course he would exist. He still would have pursued a career in rap and Lil Wayne still would have singed him to YMCMB. The only hard evidence or statistic that you can really use is sales, and Drake obviously outshines her in that, sooo.... |

Fair enough though to say those he listed were inspirations is fine but to say he is the best who has done it, if not ignorance then it's him being cocky at best. My sister has said the same thing about Nicki Minaj; that she will surprise you on one or two songs. Maybe I'm just not giving her a shot, but from what I have heard I just can't do it.

To Google? Some things just never change. The hip-hop community, and by extension, Lil Wayne had recognized him through the mixtape So Far Gone. Hell, that was when he blew up. Without it, meaning without 808s & Heartbreak, he would have never gotten to where he was now. His entire style, his entire persona, would have been drastically different. Don't believe me? Just compare So Far Gone with Comeback Season. Um no. Nineteen million copies sold worldwide for just her debut album. So yea. Then first hip-hop album to have ever gotten an Album of the Year Grammy, and only one of two (the other was OUTKAST's Speakerboxx/The Love Below), even to this very day. Is recognized by many contemporary critics as one of the best albums in the 1990s, regardless of genre. Influenced the musical styles of everyone from Adele to Teyana Taylor to Drake himself. So again, yea. And this is putting it lightly. Don't believe me? Check it's Wikipedia page entry.

So wait you can sit there and tell me that The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is not one of the best R&B/Hip-Hop albums ever? I remember most of the songs on that album being hits and every radio station playing almost the whole album. I mean most parties I went to back then played that album hard. It wasn't just the kids playing her stuff, grown folks were loving that album. Also listen to The Fugees album, The Score. One of the best hip-hop albums ever, she is very talented as a lyricist.

I'll be honest. Minaj puts you off. Once you hear songs like Stupid Hoe and Super Bass, it's difficulty to put her, as an artist, in a light that is beyond being an average, mediocre pop radio rapper. So I would say that you try to have a listen with one of her early mixtapes. If not, then a song or two will do. My recommendation? THIS, which is probably the best rap I've ever heard from her. Then again, I may be wrong, and probably am. So if you want to continue on your path of self-destruction by listening to Nicki Minaj, then you should ask Vex and send out a PM her way.
