Getting beyond the anime vs. manga argument, Kakashi Gaiden for example could be consider almost filler. The Land of Waves is crucial to the story.

It introduces the characters and both the important plots points. Naruto's desire to be recognized no matter what, and Sasuke's desire to kill someone.

Zabuza and Haku played a major role not only that but it was in the manga

it was their first REAL mission
and Naruto learned to fight for others from Haku if it was not for Haku Naruto would be LONG dead
