Valedictorian speech in spanish?

This is actually from my school, what are your thoughts on this? Is this right or wrong in your eyes? Or do you simply not care? =o

Ok. So this ordeal made me lose even more faith in humanity than before. And not even due to the debate at hand. Mostly due to the butthurt people in the comments saying that the kid was unappreciative of america, and that White, Christian, English people have no rights in America.

Sometimes, people cause me so much physical pain due to ignorance, and this is one of those times.

It's a big deal to all the parents who had to sit through the speech and not know what was being said because it was in a different language.

You are required to know english to graduate high school. The speech should have been in english.

Nope, he's the valedictorian, it's his speech, why should he have to have everybody understand what he says?

Smart move by him, this ordeal should help him get into colleges or even a high-end job.

Because English is the official language of the country. If your the President of Japan you wouldn't give a speech in Russian.

Was it a little ridiculous sure it was, but I'm sure the kids listening didn't really care that much and the speech was supposed to be for the kids.

The select few that understood probably thought it was a riveting speech.

I probably would have wanted to understand what was being said if it was my graduation, or my kid's graduation.

And if anyone says "Maybe you should learn Spanish" I just might explode. People come here from other countries, I'm not gonna learn ALL their languages if they aren't gonna learn mine.

Anyways, yea, I really don't give a damn since it doesn't involve me lol Plus, maybe it was an all Hispanic school or something. I didn't watch the video so idk if it shows the people or not.

It says the community is about 50% Hispanic, but that still isn't a good excuse.

If you come to America you learn english, not the other way around.

Wow that bolded line was a bit melodramatic but I get your point, he should've done the speech in English and he probably won't be remembered the most favorably for that, but that should be the only punishment he receives.

You would take away a title he earned from four hard years of work just because he didn't do something which is merely a formality the you want. The speech isn't a requirement.

Heck, I did my speech while running for school president in Pedro accent from Napoleon Dynamite. I don't think that's the same, but my teacher wasn't happy about it. Everyone else was, though.
Anyway, if you're the Valedictorian, you earned that crap, and good for you. I'm sure that would make some parents mad, and maybe repeating it in English would've been q good idea. Personally, im planning on waving my arms and making garbled gibberish for a few seconds if I make it. Then again, that's not easy to do

I've never heard of a high school Valedictorian who doesn't give a speech at graduation, so I am pretty sure it is a requirement.

Were you friends with your valedictorian, because I was close friends with mine and no it's not required, valedictorian is a purely academic title related to your achievement in high school, the speech is a formality. Saying it's a requirement would be a joke.

Once again don't be so melodramatic. This kid didn't have to get up and address the school but he did, the fact that he did so poorly is irritating but at the worst deserves a slap on the wrist, admonishment by faculty, and perhaps interruption mid-speech to get the child off the stage. I don't know what kind of problems you may have with this child or maybe the issue in general but that fact that you'd remove someone's hard earned title for a formality is ridiculous.

That's like taking away an athlete's championship trophy because they don't want to take pictures and give interviews after the game. Could you imagine how furious athletes and fans alike would be if that happened, the fact is they won the game, their performance after that unless it directly opposes league policy has no effect on the outcome of the game and the awards for it. Unless the school directly expressed that delivering the speech was a requirement for being valedictorian he cannot be punished for his actions.

Kid, sigh, stop you're starting to look foolish. Just because someone usually does something doesn't mean it's REQUIRED. It is a formality. What you're doing is like suggesting that a president who chooses not to give a State of the Union Address be impeached. It is a tradition but not part of the criteria for being president just like the valedictorian address isn't criteria for being valedictorian. You are awarded the title of valedictorian BEFORE you give the speech. The fact that you'd suggest someone lose their position requiring 4 years of hard work, for one transgression, shows either you have no idea of the meaning of proportionality in punishment, or you have some sort of personal bias related to this person's specific action...I'm guessing the latter.
