Ok so this is a very broad topic and my first thread on Viz so it may fail epicly but whatever. The questions are thoughts on stereotyping. Some starting points: when is it acceptable, how should it be done, is it dangerous, do you acknowledge doing it yourself, and do you ever reflect on times you've incorrectly judged others?
I understand that from a psychological perspective it is a heuristic used for a presumed understanding of another individual and thought to help us form appropriate behaviors. From an evolutionary perspective, I understand that it could've helped (and still does help) us judge people and danger quickly and calculate the risks in avoiding or confronting that danger. I know that watching your back at an ATM at four in the morning and avoiding shady figures in dark alleys just makes sense. I also know but at the same time people tend to overestimate their powers of perception and judgment often at the expense of the feelings of others. Anyways have at it ladies and gents. |
