Not necessarily. Poetry has an abstract flow called the poetic meter. Unlike rap where there's a concrete beat to fall back under, the poetic meter is completely under the control of the poet. Of course, there's been people whom's bodied their instrumentals before.

In rap, the poetic meter is substituted with the rhymetic meter, or how you count bars.

In my opinion, it is the complete opposite, because how I define poetry is to be metaphorical and has a speaker showing emotions. Poetry isn't supposed to have a set beat, because it doesn't have a set time signature at the begining, for example the Odessey and Illiad are epic poems that don't rhyme.

The answer is simple: some of it is, some of it isn't.
I don't even consider some things that claim to be poetry real poetry, things like acrostic poems and concrete poems seem so elementary half the time I can't take them seriously, and I'm not even sure how some things written in free verse even count.

Rap is also music and I'm no fine arts major but I know that both poetry and music are two fields of study that overlap but can be interpreted completely differently (ugh give me my science any day).

A lot of rap can be dictated without a beat and classified as spoken word which is considered poetry if I'm not mistaken, and the converse of the above statement is true.

A lot of times I listen to rap for different reasons: sometimes it's to dance, sometimes it's for a good love song, sometimes it's for a message or story, and sometimes it's to fill my primal, hedonistic, ignant need for a loud beat to get live to lmao.

Poetry falls under the larger category of art ,and art is simply the coporeal expression of the incorporeal portion of man. It is man exegeting his soul to his fellow man. Understanding rap with the definition, I do believe it to be poetry but very vapid, shallow and materialistic poetry.

Rap can definitely be poetry, depending on how you use it. Rappers Soulja boy just talk, but rappers like lupe fiasco use double meanings, alliteration, personification and a whole more literary devices that I honestly can't remember the name of.
