Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Sunset Archipelago

My mom told me that the government always protected the island that I lived on. They used to be a humble group, putting the people first. She said that times were great. They protected us against evil pirates, and we praised them. It was great, and we thought life would go on like this forever. We were wrong.

Four years ago, the World Government took a change in position. I heard that they were run by wise men, but now they had been corrupted. Of course, being a kid, I was still ignorant at that time, but I didn’t care. I spent most of my free time then with my father’s pirate crew.

I lived in the West Blue, on a small string of islands called the Sunset Archipelago. It was shaped like a star, with five strips of lands jutting off of the main sixth island, called the capitol island. Going from the southwest to southeast in terms of strips, we had the fishing strip, farming strip, mining strip, crafting strip, and finally our family’s strip, the trading strip.

The fishing strip was mainly composed of docks, boats, and nets. None of my friends lived there, so it was unfamiliar. Farming was the same case, but I had gone there a few times to collect some supplies. It was composed of large fields full of crops. The mining strip had a mountain filled with coal, and my uncle worked there, so I went there pretty often. The crafting strip was filled with craftsmen and forges.

Our trading strip was filled with many stalls and small buildings. People would come in and out to buy things. My mother and I sell fish and vegetables. It was a humble trade, but a lot of our income came from my father.

It was a humble and quiet life, well until a pirate ship would come visit and either party or plunder. We would accept them with open arms if they were here for the former. These pirates, including my father, were known as Peace Main pirates. They usually are very friendly and get most of their income from pirate battles with the more corrupted Morganeer pirates.

Morganeer pirates are what the Marines generalize all pirates as. They work for their own personal gain and won’t hesitate to kill anybody, even if they are part of their own crew. We rarely have visits from these pirates, but when we do, our police force fights them off. However, my father fights Morganeer pirates in the treacherous Grand Line.

He was gone for a year and a half, but he returned with a larger crew and more treasures. I remember the day when he came back like yesterday. I was in the treasure room of his ship. “Whoa, what’s in that chest?” I asked my dad.

“That’s a secret between you and me, okay?” he asked while smiling. I nodded and looked at one of his treasure chests that were locked up tighter than everything else in his ship. “Inside that chest is a devil fruit,” he whispered.

“What’s a devil fruit?” I asked, puzzled.

“If you take a bite of that fruit, you get one power of the sea devil, but the ocean rejects you, making you lose the power to swim,” he said. “These are rare in the four blues, but the Grand Line has many devil fruit users,”

“Why don’t you eat it?” I asked.

“We thought about it, but it was much too valuable to be eaten, in my opinion. Plus, we don’t know if it could be even that powerful. We’ll sell it instead.” He said calmly.

“Well… can I at least see it?” I asked. My father laughed and said yes, as he pulled out two keys from inside his jacket. He inserted both into the chest and turned it until the chest popped open. I looked at the fruit. It was an apple the size of a melon. It was colored a sapphire blue and had swirly indents around the side. It was one of the strangest things I ever laid my eyes on.

“Weird, huh?” my dad said. I was disappointed that I couldn’t find out what it was, and my father could tell. “I know you like it, but we have to sell it. We’ll get some extra beli in from that. We might even get enough money to buy a new ship!”

“A ship is cool too, but a devil fruit is super rare! How can you pass it up?” I asked slightly angry.

“We need the extra money. We’ll run out soon enough, so we need all we can get…” He saw my disappointed face. “Can I trust you with this key?” he asked.

I perked up. “Sure! Let me see it!” I grabbed one key from his hand. At that age, I felt important holding a key to a treasure, even though I couldn’t open the chest. From that day on, the whole town partied with my father’s crew, and I would be lying if I said I didn’t try to steal the second key a few times.

Life seemed great at that point. It actually was great, until the World Government officials appeared.

Chapter 2: Separation

The capitol island had tall, large buildings filled with important figures. It was stationed on a rocky beach, with each building built on top of a boulder, but the main capitol building rose above the others on the largest rock. It was a big change from the market stalls from the trade strip. They apparently had some business with the World Government that day.
I didn’t know all of the details, but it turned out that with the World Government’s new change in power, every country affiliated with the old World Government had to reestablish their contract with them. They came in a large battleship, surrounded by other smaller ships, filled with Marines.

I was done selling fish from the southwest strip that day and sneaked off to the capitol island to see the giant ships. I peered from behind some rocks with some of my other friends and saw men in black suits climb down from the main ship and enter the capitol building. I had never been this close to the capitol because it never seemed that interesting, except for its size.

The Marines looked rough and tough, equipped with their rifles and led by a tall man with a jacket strapped to his back like a cape. In big black characters, the jacket had the word, “Justice” going down it. The man was wearing an ironed grey suit. From afar, I could barely make out his face, but he had a grizzly complexion. He had a thick goatee and scruffy hair.

“Hey Garrend,” my friend Samuel whispered to me, “I think that’s a Vice-Admiral,”

“What’s a Vice-Admiral?” I asked.

My two friends gasped, “You’re kidding right? Oh my God Garrend, don’t you ever go outside?” my other friend Jenner said snootily. “They’re the third most powerful force in the Marines, behind the Admirals and the Fleet Admiral,”

“Wow…” I murmured. I kicked myself for not knowing that. It was mind-blowing to think that someone of such power would go to a tiny island like ours’. I wonder what kind of power he had. I wondered if he could even beat my dad. Most of all, I wondered if he had been on the Grand Line and had eaten a devil fruit.

We waited for at least half an hour before the other two headed back. “This is boring. They’re just standing around,” said Jenner. Both of them walked off, but I waited and looked on and on. I could hear faint sounds of yelling as I waited. A few minutes later, I saw the government officials walk out in a hurry, looking angry.

The governor of Sunset Archipelago waved his fist and cured at them as they boarded the ships. What would happen? Surely, they would lose Marine backup, but what else? I ran back as the sun started turning red as it lowered toward the horizon. The ships started sailing away, but they split up, for some reason.

I then noticed that the main battleship stayed in the same place. Suddenly, I heard the cracking of some gears as I saw the cannons point down toward the boulder below the building. I started sprinting back to the trading strip as fast as possible as I heard a thunderous boom. I looked behind me to see the capitol building up in flames.

My eyes widened as I sprinted back to our home. The battleships were ahead of me, attacking each strip, and it would only be a matter of time before our home was destroyed. Our only hope was to sail off with my father, but that was only possible if I could make it back in time.

I ran back as fast as possible, but there were rocks and other debris on the ground hindering my progress. I jumped onto the first stone and steadily grasped each gap between the rocks and slowly, but surely, climb over. I stuck my eyes over the top rock and peered at our village.

What I saw was unexplainable. The homes were burning and the air around there was filled with ash. Cannonballs, debris, and corpses lined the ground, as people ran around to find family and safety. I saw two battleships blowing everything up, and Marines slaughtering people like Morganeer pirates.

I jumped over the rock and searched for my family. I quickly saw my mother on the ground, barely standing up. I ran to her and saw her frightened face. She told me to run, but I used all of my strength to hitch her on my back as we started trotting to safety.

BOOM! A cannonball exploded right next to us, knocking us back and sending fragments from rock everywhere. I had two lodged in my arm and one in my leg, but they weren’t deep. I pulled them out, but I saw my mother. There were rocks stuck in her face, and stomach. I quickly pulled tem out, and wrapped cloth from my shirt over her face, but she stopped me.

“No time… just run,” my eyes started watering as I started crying. She held me closely. I got up and sprinted away, as she passed into the afterlife. I had to find my dad. I ran around debris and jumped over rocks until I found his ship, anchored against the docks, with some of his crew fighting the Marines off.

I climbed up the ship, via anchor and picked up a gun. “What are you doing here?” asked my dad’s first mate hastily. I fired the gun and shot one Marine down, I then asked where my dad was. “He’s further down the beach, but stay here for safety, he’s fighting the-“ I jumped off the boat and into the water before he could finish his sentence.

Chapter 3: Justice

I waded through the water, until I heard sounds of yelling. I saw two men on the beach. One of them was my father. I crouched behind a rock as I observed his opponent. The other guy was taller than my dad by about 3 inches; he looked about 25, and was buff. He had his shirt off and was taunting my dad. “So, you’re the $190 million bounty, “Broadsword” Thompson? Hah! What a joke! I never thought the fearsome Grand Line pirate was just a stupid middle-aged man. ” Suddenly, the man’s arms changed into giant blades. Down his forearm was a giant edge of a sword. I’ve never seen anything like it. He spun in place for a few seconds and then shot a sword beam, a compacted shockwave of air caused form that blade’s swing, straight at my dad.

The attack was amazing, but it was aimed straight at my dad. I shut my eyes right as it was in front of him. I heard the explosion, but looked up to see, in my delight, his uninjured body. He had his trademark “broadsword,” a blade that was made from one small island in the Grand Line. It was had a long, triangular shape to it. Although it is heavier and larger than a katana, his strength lets it pack a punch. “…And I take you’re the Rear Admiral Doppler. I’ve heard my fair share of stories about you. The famous wielder of the Supa Supa no Mi, the fruit that turns you into steel and lets your limbs become blades… And yet your sword beam couldn’t even take a one-handed swing.“

“You… Shut up! That was a weak beam just to see if I could kill you that easily!” He rushed forward with blades under his fingers, attempting to slice up my dad, but the great pirate was much stronger than him. He was dodging every attack with ease, until he finally got bored and smacked Doppler in the chest with the butt of his sword, sending the Rear Admiral flying into a dune. Marine got back up and yelled, “Is that all you’ve got? I’ve fought chore boy worse than you!” He sprinted forward and his right hand turned into a saw blade, of sorts. The edge started spinning as he swung at my dad’s head.

However, my father easily stepped to the side and swung once at his back. The cut shocked the enemy. “Are you surprised at seeing your own blood? You obviously haven’t been in the New World before,” Doppler turned both of his arms into giant blades and spun at my dad. “I’ve sparred with people like you. I always thought you guys insult us to try to distract us or lower our morale,” My dad continued. He jumped back away from the arms and bounced back ahead with an upward thrust which stopped the blades. “But now I know that it’s not suppose to affect my morale, but instead it’s just,” The pirate spun his blade in front of him and delivered a lightning-fast slash across Doppler’s chest. “…A cheap way to raise your own ego.”

Doppler stumbled a few yards back. “You don’t know anything about me! You don’t even have a devil fruit! And now, I’ll show you why the weak like you deserve to be dead!”

“I don’t need a devil fruit. All I need is my sword and my haki,” My father replied. What was this haki? Was it another kind of power? “Devil fruits are a coward’s way of getting stronger. You sell your body to the devil for deformities and mutant powers. I’ll never eat one, and I’m going to show the rest of the world what I can do without one,” My father’s words made me regret ever trying to get the chest open, but I didn’t have enough time to think of that. “Shinigami’s Might!” I saw him draw back his blade and stab forward, shooting a jet black sword beam that moved faster than anything I’ve seen. Strangely enough, the Rear Admiral managed to somehow see it coming, and deflected most of the blast with his blade arm. However, I saw him profusely bleeding.

“You… You’ll pay for this greatly!” His expression turned to anger almost immediately. But he suddenly started collapsing. As he fell on the ground, my dad wiped the sweat off his brow and started running back to the ship. I got out from behind the boulder, and he saw me.

I had an amazed look on my face. “Dad! That was-“

“What are you doing here? Get back to safety!” His face was serious. Logic finally hit me as I realized that more reinforcements would come. I was about to turn around to run until I saw a horrible sight. The Rear Admiral was right behind my dad. He somehow flew towards him. Doppler pounced from above and attempted to kill my father with his blade arms. My father quickly drew his sword. Suddenly, it flew out of his hands! I closed my eyes, but that only made things worse, as my imagination couldn’t have thought of something as brutal as reality.

Rear-Admiral Doppler had slashed a giant X-shaped gash in my dad’s chest. I started to back away. I then saw another man behind Doppler. He had been hiding in the shadows. My dad coughed up blood and suddenly had a look in his eyes I had never seen before but I now realize what it was. Fear. I then saw who it was. It was the man in the grey suit and “Justice” jacket tied to his back. It was the Vice Admiral. He had his arm raised, as if he was lifting Doppler without touching him. “Tesla! You son of a…” His words were drowned by his coughs. The Vice Admiral, Tesla looked upon my dad with a look on a face that a father gives a son when he’s disappointed.

Tesla threw aside his arm, and Doppler went flying to the side. “Your skills have dulled ever since leaving the New World. However, I must thank you. Even though Doppler is nothing but a trash rookie with powers; he’s been a powerful weapon. No metal tool under my magnetism has worked so well. Even when unconscious, I can use him to strike you down. But second to him is your fine blade. I might just add it to my collection.” He held up the broadsword.

My dad cursed under his breath.

“I assume that’s your son, back there,” I stopped for a second.” He’s a weak looking kid for his age, just like his dad. How old is he, 13? 14? It doesn’t matter. I won’t kill him, but he’ll eventually be found by Marines and face his fate there. But for now, he’ll face his next bit of harsh reality. Goodbye, Thompson, I’d like to say it’s been fun, but it’s something else.” I tried to squeeze my eyes shut and run. I couldn’t. He lifted the broadsword and stabbed my father’s head.

I sprinted away as fast as I could, holding back my tears, but I couldn’t sustain it any longer. I started sobbing. My mom had died. My dad had died. And all of the people I knew and loved were gone. As I ran, I heard the Vice Admiral finish his sentence.

“It’s Justice,”

Chapter 4: Devil’s Might

I kept running and running. It seemed like eternity before I could even make it back to the ship. However, I finally managed to get there right as they finished defeating the latest squad of Marines. The first mate looked at me, “Hey Garrend, where’s your…” He saw my face. “Oh…” He then turned to his crew and announced that he was the new captain and told everyone to get ready for sailing. Suddenly, he saw one last squad rushing towards the ship. He told me to stay down below.

I rushed into the ship, and tried to go as low as I could. I eventually reached the treasure room. I hid in a corner, behind the devil frit chest, and just cried. I couldn’t believe what had happened to island, no, the world. As I sat there and listened to the sound of fighting above, I felt like I was sitting on something hard. I got up and looked to see what it was. It was none other than a letter titled to… me. I was interested. I picked it up and started reading it, in the dim light.

If you are reading this, then the worst has happened. I don’t even know the chance of you finding this, but knowing you, the place where you would go as a last resort for help when I’m gone, is no where else than to this chest. Take the Devil Fruit and eat it wisely. And no matter what happens to me, your mother, or anyone else, stay strong and survive.

My tears were running more than before. I sniffled, I sobbed, I whimpered, I wailed. Every sign of sadness rushed through me. I finally saw that under the note was the second key. As I heard the sound of fighting growing closer, the sadness turned into anger, hatred, a lust for revenge. I wanted to see these Marines dead. I have never felt so inhumane in my life. The rush of adrenaline was too much. I put both keys in the chest and opened it quickly. I took the large apple out of it, and I stared at it hungrily.

My hunger, however, was not a hunger for the fruit itself, but for power, a conscious-ridden drive for the death of an enemy, not too dissimilar to those of great warriors in their final battles. The fighting grew closer. The first-mate’s cries of anger rushed through the ship, but it was drowned out by the agonizing screams of pain of the Marines. Eventually, those screams were drowned out by others’, and finally his own, as the gallant first mate fell at the hands of the merciless World Government.

However, there were only three Marines left by the time they had saw me. I was transforming from a sad, afraid little boy to something much worse. As they headed down the stairs, I finally gallantly took a bite of the devil fruit, but as I was about to swallow, my father’s cruse against Devil Fruit users echoed in my mind. However, I had to finally sacrifice myself, as I became one of the Devil’s pawns. I swallowed, and it tasted bitter. I inhaled bite after bite, crazily devouring the fruit, but the soldiers had reached the treasure room. They didn’t notice me, yet, as they scanned the room.

The events that occurred next are unspeakable, as I truly realized why these things are called Devil Fruits. As one marine neared me, he must’ve saw me peripherally and pulled out his rifle. He was about to shoot, but my body went straight to primal instinct. I suddenly jumped straight into the air, right above the Marine just as he fired his bullet. I quickly landed behind him, and strength rushed to my arms as I easily grabbed the rifle out of his arms and swung it straight at his face. The man smashed straight into the wall.

The other marines looked at me in awe for a split second before coming to their senses. One pulled out a pistol and fired at me. I tried to dodge it, and my body became nimble again. I ducked under the shot, and my right arm became extremely buff. I jabbed the rifle upwards at his chin, and his head smashed the ceiling. The last one didn’t even move until he saw the remains of the apple. He slowly backed away as he picked up a Den Den Mushi from his back pocket. I approached him as he yelled into the microphone.

“D-do you copy? It’s the pirate ship. A kid… he ate a Devil Fruit! We need backup-”

“Soldier, repeat what you saw!”

“It’s… it’s a superhuman!”

I don’t remember distinctly what happened here, but all I can recollect was my shadow towering over him. It was later reported that the ship had been smashed with the Marine’s body, and had capsized, taking me with it. However, due to the tides, I luckily wound up back on shore. I’m not sure if lucky was the right word, as nothing good had happened. It was just a less severe shade of “bad”. Nevertheless, taking those bites and swallowing it all not only changed my situation, but changed my life. Forever.
