manga vs. american comics

this is just a topic to debate the ups and downs of both manga and american comics, as well as say which you personally prefer and why.

which's arts most appealing?

which generally has a better story?

which is less cliched?

which has better designs?

and most importantly which do YOU prefer?

i myself choose manga on most of these points as iv'e never really got into the american stuff. the characters seem kind of bland to me and im not crazy about the art (although it can be very good).this is just my opinion however.

sorry about the section pride. also im talking about overall since most mangas are more similar to each other than american comics and vice versa (especially in art and design) . its simply what you prefer as a whole.

This one depends a lot, there are hundreds of artists for each with each their own unique style.

which generally has a better story?
Generally, I found the best comic stories to beat the best manga stories.

which is less cliched?
Manga, their both incredibly cliched though.

which has better designs?
They both have an incredible amount and variety of designs so it depends.

and most importantly which do YOU prefer?
Manga usually since they have beginnings and endings and they have more genre variety from what I've read anyways. Although, their are some comics I enjoy reading.

Western comics for all it's accomplished

the single most recognized word on the entire damn planet..no matter the language or culture..or what ever...it is completely universal even the guys living under rocks

Superman..second is coca cola...

not goku..not naruto...the most known word in the history of the world..is a comic character

that being said..both have influenced each other a great deal

the creator of Rouroni kenshin for example was a major spiderman wolverine and spawn fan..with a little superman and batman thrown in

we can see this clearly in hikos cape..his pl (being the verse zero tier much like supes) kenshin is based off spidey his own admission...and saito and ginei..where homages to wolverine batman and gambit

conversly Grant morrison has admitted to being a fan of kenshin....several other comic writers have copped to being influenced by manga

many of the early manga works..are influenced by superman popeye..and especially Jack kirby stan lee and steve dikto..(the Absolute justice philosophy prevalent in many mangas..was pioneered by ditko's early work)

The guy who did saint seiya has copped to being a fan of Lee and kirby's early cosmic sagas..and especially his work with odin and thor and herc darkseid and all as much as actual mythology (the guy I think actually attended kirby's funeral or sent flowers and a thank you card though I am not sure on this)

goku one can see both the elements of sun wu kung and superman

Comics for me for the lasting impact they have had..on the world..that their the new world mythology...and for the fact that..they started the exchange between east and west

personally I like both but Comics have had some of the best written story lines around...some of the old school writers where the best in their field

utterly dominate here... miller morrison and moore especially and by many mangekas own admission too

never mind that Dikto and Kirby kinda stand on a plateu no mangeka has ever reached..

if its a choice between say shinji aramaki and jeff leob..I'll take Aramaki any day

Haven't read comics since the 80's and 90's, but I will give this a go.

which's arts most appealing? Completely depends on the artist and style, but given that manga are rush jobs comics win easily. Look at McFarlane's stuff. Amazing.

which generally has a better story? Same as above. But, I'd say comics pace it better.

which is less cliched? Don't even know what this question means. It's not the story it's how you tell it. The best story telling generally relies on common themes.

which has better designs? You mean production design? Comics again. Much bigger. In friggen color. Monthly, or I guess bimonthly, now just allows a full story to be told. And not ever comic has to end with a cliff hanger.

and most importantly which do YOU prefer?
I suppose I should say comics, but if I read either, it is manga. Probably because comics went to hell, I am not goign back.

True,but that's hardly ever the case.The person doing it is usually just saying stupid.

Don't read comics so I can't say much,though from what I have seen,I can say that I prefer manga's art style for the most part.
