Chapter 17: A Bond

Although I wasn’t there, I can tell you what happened.

Alex was crouched up in the cell, slowly poking at his dinner. He was struck with grief and confusion. He didn’t understand what had washed over him that day. Sure, he felt jealous of Hayden, but not to that extent. He kept on retracing his memory, thinking of what happened. The few minutes before going on the mission were a blur. He couldn’t think of what happened, and the stress just made him angrier.

Suddenly, Alice dropped by his cell. He looked up and barely smiled. “Why are you here?” he asked.

“That’s what I wanted to ask you,” she replied.

“I d-don’t know what happened. I just felt angry that day…” He stomped on the ground. “Why does he get special treatment? Is it because of the elemental scythe? For the past year, we were almost equal, but I was only a notch above him. Now, everything is going wrong… I’m so sorry. I can’t explain it,”

She stuck her hand through the bars and grabbed his. “You know, even though we known each other for like a week, you guys and everyone else here are like my family. I always wanted a family,” she said softly.

“When I was young, my dad would always come home past midnight, drunk or high. He always scared me. My mom was an alcoholic who always overslept. Every time I talked to them, they would always give me a dirty look and act like they had better things to do.

Somehow, I survived for 13 years. Soon, I was so scared; I escaped and lived at my friend’s house. They contacted my parents and all they got was a phone hanging up. They always got worse and worse. Soon, I stayed at my friend’s house, living like a sibling.

I stayed for about a month until I was given to the police. I was put in an adoption center, my heart crushed. No one wanted to adopt a 13-year-old girl, who was rebellious and kind of rowdy. Soon, I lived my life there, making some friends with younger kids, but the more days passed, the more out of place I felt.

I started going through severe depression. The people running the adoption house didn’t like me either. They were highly devout Christians and would always repeat verses of the Bible when I did something wrong. They called me things like, devil-child or rowdy little beast. They couldn’t take the nature of a rebellious teen. I couldn’t even help around, for they thought I was going to ‘corrupt the children.’ I just wanted to be with someone. Later, I ran away again, in the middle of the night.

I went through the forest, tears on my face, and I stepped on what I think was a snake. It retaliated and bit me 3 times. I started slowing down, breathing harder, until I started getting dizzy. I fell down and got fell asleep. The next day, I felt sick and threw up; walking through the forests and different ranges, which I believe, was a giant animal reserve.

Eventually, I reached people and they rushed me to the E.R. I was in pain as they tried to cure me. I then found out that it was too late, as the venom was still circulating through my vessels. The wound was already infected, so any measures now would be useless. That day, I slowly died,” she finished.

Alex was flabbergasted, to say the least. “Well, I always wanted a family. I just wish that the family could stay together,” she told him.

Alex shuffled around and he slowly nodded,” I’ll try,” Alice picked up his lunch tray and left.

Later that night, Alice returned to pick up his dinner tray as she saw him looking quite angry. “What happened?”

“I can’t participate in the battle. Just because I freaked out once means that I can’t fight for what I think is right?”

“Well, they don’t want to run the risk of you attacking anyone…”

“Oh really? You’re just like this stupid Death Monarchy. You can’t even take chances! You… you…” Alice stepped back, scared.

“T-they were right about that…” She finally said as she ran off. Alex started crying one tear, losing the only girl he liked here, this time, for good. He vowed revenge on Hayden. If he didn’t go showing off his powers then Alex wouldn’t be in this position…

Yes! More back story, I have a feeling that you are going to make the Alex dude evil in someway but I could be wrong. Anyway good work and keep it coming.
