Default Why was Naruto's herritage kept secret?

I was just wondering why they kept the fact he was the 4th hokage's son a secret for so long?
Did they not know?
If they knew then why not tell him?
But if they already had known, then why would the people of the Village treat him so bad?

When exactly were his peers aware he was the 4ths son?

As Sakura began treating Naruto better once Sasuke left.

Well this is an interesting yet not quite thought out of a question, They kept it a secret but they knew he was the son of Minato the reason they kept it secret is unknown.

Who all knew? Everyone in the village? Then why did they treat Naruto like crap if the the 4th is so respected? I just cant see how they treated him so badly even if he had the nine tales inside of him if they knew of his heritage.

Naruto's last name is Uzumaki?
Negato's last name is Namikaze?

Interesting. Was his mother's last name Uzumaki?

It was stated by Minato, if I'm not mistaken that it was because of enemies who would target Naruto. I never understood that reasoning and how he would be targeted anymore than he is as the Jinchuuriki.

Yes his mothers name was Uzumaki.

Both Naruto and Negato are distantly related to each other this is certain. But you made me think of another question.
Why did Naruto not have his father's last name?

Interesting that would make some sense to why they would keep it a secret. But then who all knew of his heritage?

Minato killed a lot of men.

Targeting his son would be out of pure hatred for the death of the victims' families/friends.

Targeting the Jincurriki would be out of the desire for power.

Hatred is more powerful.

Naruto chapter 510, page 17....Madara reveals that the two Naruto and Negato come from the same "Uzumaki" clan.

IDK if I necessarily believe that logic. It might be true but I don't see how Naruto could be a bigger target then he already is. They are fighting a world war over the sole fact that him and b are jinjurikies. So that desire for power started a world war to get to Naruto and B. Every nation that Minato had enemies in put their differences aside to fight this common evil searching for power. All of the 5 powerful nations agreed to DEFEND Naruto.

It was kept a secret in order to protect Naruto from being targeted by enemies.

The entire village did not know. I believe the only people who knew were Hiruzen, Jiraiya, and the elders.

I think they kept it a secret so that Naruto would not be a spoiled brat. Also, everyone would of wanted to be his friend so he would of never been alone since the beginning. Being alone is what made him strong and also, if that didn't happen: gaara would still be mean, Neji would still believe you cant change destiny, tsunade would still be afraid of blood, etc. Hope you get my point.
