Why is being a pedophile a mental disorder, but being gay isn't

Since both you can't really control who your're attracted too, I don't really see why one should be categorized as a mental disorder and one isn't.

Saying it is a mental disorder would be assuming it's bad to be gay.

It's uncertain exactly what causes a person to be attracted to the same sex, or children, etc. However at the moment it seems clear that it isn't a choice, it's a predesposition that people are born with, however the fact it's not a choice, doesn't make it a mental disorder either. Because someone's brain works differently from what is considered 'normal' doesn't mean they have any kind of disorder.

Its defiantly not in our species best interest to be gay. It is a undesirable set of traits that nature wouldn't commonly intend someone to have. Its this way because nature wants us to reproduce and spread our genes and that kind of hard to do if you were homosexual. I'm not saying they cant have kids through artificial insemination or by adopting. However, that being said, they cannot help it because it is apart of who they are. Its programmed in their DNA. Its not like they have had a traumatic event that made them gay they just have and always will be attracted to the same sex. So I would consider it a biological disorder for the simple fact that it could prevent reproduction.

All well and good, except for the bolded sentence.

I think you'll find that there are multiple documented instances where animals other than humans have been attracted to their own sex.

The line I'm going to draw here is that nature does "commonly" produce beings attracted to their own sex, as seen across the animal kingdom.

As a follow-up, I'd like to say that nature can't really "intend" anything, and that we might not be able to say what is truly best for the species. Where are trying to look at the outside of the box and we stand inside of it.

However that may be, I will agree that it appears that having gay individuals within the species would limit the species' ability to reproduce.

We could speculate indefinatly on what benefits or disadvantages having gay individuals within the species might have, but to summarize, I'd say my point was one of technicality, not principle.
